tkb417:Ol boy reply my email na! I don dey ask you for £200 since last month you still dey shakara. The fact is, being abroad is better for some folk, while it will be a wrong move for others. Let each person decide what is best for them and act appropriately. aysometin:God Bless you too jare my sister. Good to hear you aren't planning to rely on anyone. There are too many sad stories of people being cast out by their friends or family when cost of supporting an extra mouth went too high. I guess you are moving alone for now? Please don't ship the whole family to the UK till you have a bit more certainty as to work/school. Regarding job seeker allowances, make sure you are eligible and find out all the relevant information. You might not be eligible on the basis of contribution since you haven't made enough NI payments, but you may be eligible for income support or some other benefits. aysometin:This is so true - don't be daunted by the difficulty or opposition, nothing good comes easy especially in times like this. Wish you all the best, keep us updated. |

tkb417,hehe ure funny. This was how my sister was sounding b4 leaving 9ja she will do anything to live her life abroad. It got to a point when NEPA strikes, she'll be like "i don tell una make una leave me go jand" now shes not regretting. as a matter of fact, she'll never stay in 9ja for more than 2 weeks. she told me during the xmas time that she used to suffer asthma attacks when she was in 9ja, now 2 years after leaving, she hasnt suffered any attacks. i dunno how true that is but some people will cut heads to live abroad. as for me, Abuja lowo wa. When im done hustling in Lagos, im running to Abuja to fight for my own allocations i no dey go abroad abeggi. |

Been a while on this forum, but this topic really caught my attention, the other day I was in the tube and some 9ja students were just chatting about the fact fo whether to go home or not after their programme,My own submission is this, Be fully persuaded ohhhh, some of us spent the first twenty yepa of their lives in this same Nigeria, and you have only spent 1 or 2 years you are already crying I want to go back home Be fully persuaded about it,cause at the end of the day,Na only you go face the music,no country has it all,no country is good,it is the citizenry that makes the country good, If you no get Human connection for 9ja,please stay here and polish your accent and yourself and you will get the best of the best jobs, well excerpt if you get God well well and please make sure you get am correct ohhh,if you no get human or God connection for obodo 9ja he go be like living hell ohhh ,But Nothing is impossible for God to do. You need to also know that the opportunities that people are saying is available in Nigeria is not going around in whatever sector, supply will always fall short of demand! My advice is this.try make some money for here,i mean clean money even without doing menial jobs, carry the money with you when going to 9ja,if you are in the category,Nigeria by force I must go ,so that in case if the opportunity wey people dey talk about no show face, you fit get capital to start a small scale business, cause boredom can lead to fraustration, which can lead to uncurtailed aggravation For me,until I land my dream job from here no relocation ohhhh,i knew what I went through before I secured a job with NIIT and with the peanuts they where giving as salary ! Just my own opinion |

Hi All, Interesting thread. I think the issue of whether to stay abroad or come back and work in naija should not be a matter of cash. Are we pricing yam here? Which makes me wonder how we Nigerians actually think, and , except you don't want to be honest to yourself, explains to a large extent why we seem to work very hard as a people, yet you see very little output or change overall for the nation. My own personal opinion is, if you can't find a job in naija, going abroad may not significantly change things for you if you do not get the fundamentals right. We all want a better life, and a better life is much more than naira, kobo, pounds and dollars. A better life is also something you work for with a long term mindset. If that includes moving to another country, so be it. Unfortunately in Nigeria we are conditioned towards quick wins, and we even bend our society to produce quick wins, against the grain of all logic. This issue of someone hired from UK and paid 25m in a bank in Nigeria, you begin to wonder what exactly was the motive behind that, because 25m a year would have also gotten the bank 5 of the best first class graduates in Nigeria, plus good solid training and exposure for that one year. Abi what is the guy going to implement as a 'repat'? We don't even have that kind of developed financial sector here, and the global climate has gone bust. If na technology, most of the banks are running Indian software, with armies of Indian software engineers doing what Nigerians can actually do already, so one extra guy from Accenture, even with all the excellently-formatted powerpoints and spreadsheets, SWOT, PESTE and all other analyses, fish-bone diagram, six sigma, nine sigma, value chain, and all other high-sounding big grammar won't exactly change anything. In fact, I make bold to say that these whopper salaries in Nigeria, especially in financial services, cannot be sustained for much longer. I'd like for any banker in here to pls convince me otherwise abeg. As a nation, we need to get the fundamentals right. So as a person, if you don't know whether to go abroad or stay in Nigeria, just go back to your own fundamentals. Just my two cents. |

Just something else I'd like to share. Some weeks back in BizDay, there was this analysis on the trend of Nigerians repatriating funds to the UK for studies. The writer was saying, even though it wasn't such a bad thing, Nigeria ultimately loses out in the international job pool when they go abroad and run back home to pick up jobs in naija. What is the international job pool? It is that circle of skilled workers, usually nowdays from India, China, Indonesia, and the Phillipines, who criss-cross the globe picking up blue-chip highly skilled jobs all over the world. You find them everywhere, be it banking, energy, telecom, healthcare, or any sector whatsoever. Most of them do not have the kind of expensive postgraduate training that Nigerians have gotten. We send people every year to Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, Imperial College, Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, etc. All these schools are in the global top 20 MBA, and should guarantee a top job in those developed economies. Nigerians who study at these institutions should be at the very apex of that job pool, primarily because we speak and study in English, we are easier to transplant, and we don't pose any significant security risk, unlike, say, Pakistanis. Except for telecoms in recent times, the ability of a Nigerian based in Nigeria to tap into this global talent pool and find a job anywhere, even within the same Africa, was very much limited. Till now, it still remains the exclusive preserve of these Asians, no matter the sector, no matter the location. The gain of their home countries usually is in the repatriation of cash back home, and also the ability of the home government to draw from this skill base as their economies develop. Because of our large population, and the number of people trooping out to study abroad, we should have been playing in this market, after all we are the 6th most populous nation. That was the analyst's opinion, not mine. |

Looks like this particular question may end up a non sequitur after all. Check this out from the Financial Times: BofA withdraws job offers to foreign MBAs By Della Bradshaw in London Published: March 9 2009 00:07 | Last updated: March 9 2009 00:07 Bank of America has become the first US bank to withdraw job offers made to MBA students graduating from US business schools this summer, citing conditions laid out in its bail-out deal as the reason. The recently passed $787bn stimulus bill in effect prevents financial institutions that have received money from the government’s troubled asset relief programme from applying for H1-B visas for highly skilled immigrants if they have recently made US workers redundant. A spokesman for the bank said: “Recent changes in legislation made it necessary for Bank of America to rescind job offers it had made to students requiring H-1B sponsorship.” The number of international students affected by the BofA move is thought to be no more than 50 but business schools are concerned that other banks could follow suit. Traditionally, about a third of MBA students at the leading US schools have taken up finance and banking jobs on graduation, with about a third of those MBAs coming from outside the US. Some supporters of freer migration have criticised the Tarp measure for threatening to cut the US off from foreign talent and encouraging tit-for-tat retaliation by other countries. One concern for business school deans is that students who have traditionally studied in the US may go elsewhere. “There might be an inclination for people from around the world to vote with their feet,” says David Schmittlein, dean of MIT’s Sloan school of management in Boston. Living outside your own country is hard. Emotionally, financially and everything-ally. It is like a game that should be played with the utmost strategy and 'sense'. Many jobs here will pay you 'good money' but if youintend to return to naija , it will not make for good experience nor will it pay you good money. Whatever career you choose here make sure it will enhance opportunities for you in nigeria. Nigeria is full of opportunities no matter what anyone says. Those of us here have to claw our way to the top. The effort i put into my job here is 4 times what i put in in naija all in a bid to be taken seriously. It is hard, i kid you not. You look different, you sound different and on my job that alone makes all the difference. Usually i recommend to people who finish their masters to return to nigeria. You will find a job. A good one at that. You should be looking at organizations that recognize the worth of a foreign degree. No matter what anyone says a foreign degree adds real worth to you and your resume. (ive schooled both in nigeria and over here and there is no comparism as to quality! ) If you can get some experience here and live comfortably do it. If living here makes you almost destitute, its not worth it. You dont have to suffer and live like a mouse. Just pack your things abeg and return home. I see some nigerians here in anguish and all they think about is that they will be shaming their family by returning. Shaming who? You have received the degree you came for abi? I Had a plan for myself when i came here. Its nearing fruition. I see myself returning soon. I am looking forward to it. 1 Like |

@ Ancient1 are u still around man? Unconfirmed gist says njar firms are slashing down salaries and downsizing. I reckon one has to intensify the job search everywhere till a champagne-class job comes through. At the moment, home does'nt seem to be homely enough. Just to reiterate this, msc/mba abroad is never a waste;especially with a red-brick uni , man you are sorted,it might take a while though. Njar uni's are not that terrible but the it can't be quanitified with a degree abroad. Though people are saying graduating in the wake of this whole financial mess makes it more difficult, but 'men' still they get jobs. God dey! |

@ Sukkie, right you are! I was chatting to a friend working with KPMG last week, and he was telling me how salaries had been slashed. And this has been done in many banks and blue-chip coys back home. Really, Naija doesnt seem too homely right now. But anyway, I think at the end of the day, it all still depends on the individual. Weigh your options and decide what is best for you, even if you decide to remain here doing your not-so-perfect job. As long as you it pays your bills, and you can live with it and yourself. |

i could not help it but to add my own .This is such an interesting topic . so for those of you that want to go back to nigeria after your msc bear in mind that if you dont have very long legs that dream of getting 7 million naira a year will never happen, because that is how the system works, and even if you did get a job that would pay as much as that in nigeria, factors like noise pollution from generator, the hours that it will take you to get to work every morning because of the bad roads, unwanted visitors that call at your house when you did not invite them, lack good healthcare system, thieves, the list is endless. if you have always lived in nigeria it really should not be problem adjusting to all this, but for thoase that have lived most of thier lives abroad it will come as a shock. and if you think staying abroad is easier think again, the good thing about abroad is like my mum will say in yoruba o bo asiri, that is secrets are not that exposed as how you feed, or how you manage. Even in times of crises the secret of getting a good job is to sell yourself. Fake your accents , apply for different kinds of jobs, dont limit it to a certain type. companies are still taking on graduates. be very flexible. i personally think that staying abroad is still a very good option instead of going to nigeria where demand is greater than supply. note that our limits in life are the ones we place on ourselves. |

Hello my people, its me ancient 1, the poster of this topic here again. Let me share some things as i see them now, Well well well, i went back to Nigeria to try and get a job right, and i must say i quit my 2 not-okay jobs here from which i was earning a little over a thousand pounds monthly. I have to tell u i was in nigeria for 2 full months and did not get a job, in fact i met a guy who had come from uk after his masters like 6 months before myself and had still not found a job, i attended a couple of interviews tho, all the companies offering to pay peanuts. You would never imagine. There was 1 in particular, the number 1 of the big 5 auditing firms in naija which i was particularly interested in (Im sure you already know the company im talking about and are like yeah i know that company, their pay is massive, Yeah right!) , even after agreeing to collect their little over 100k salary (can u freaking imagine) they later said ehn, my qualifications do not match up their expectations, lol, i was like err, this is an entry level graduate trainee programme, i have not only a first degree but also a masters from abroad and my qualifications do not match? (Jokers) and i must point out that the ppl i met whom i was interviewed with had only bscs, so what do u have to say to that? My people, make no mistake there are jobs in nigeria, even if there are no jobs the jobs would be created if your legs are long enough, its a sad reality but the fact is that connections rule in the naija job market and if you dont have the connections, the only way u might be able to substitute for that is if yu have very very relevant qualifications along with years of experience to back it up, but as a fresh graduate without experience and connections, my sincere advice to u is that yu should not go back just yet, hang around a little, work, save and write professional exams, try try try to get a job and gain some experience before going back. Needless to say im back in the UK, enrolled for a professional course, and i should be writing another after this 1. Also working on an unpaid placement in the US to gain some experience, ive actualy been taken and i should start before the end of d year. We must never give up, you just have to keep on pushing, thats it. |

Thank God for this thread. I thought I was the only one going through this dilemma. Well, I also completed an engineering postgraduate degree (M.Sc) in the UK (2008),and I immediately opted to go for a 2nd masters in management rather than waste the year washing plates and pushing wheelchairs. I only hope that both masters will improve my chances in gaining a very good job back home. However the problem I face is that I've only got 2 years experience in my field, and getting a job here (including internships) is extremely difficult. |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by debosky(m): 2:39pm On Jul 18, 2009 |
Nice to read for you ancient1. I am sad to hear you had such a frustrating experience in your job search in Nigeria, but that happens to be the fate of many individuals. The good thing is that you didn't give up and you are currently improving yourself with additional qualifications. Glad to hear that you got the unpaid placement in the US, maybe you can shed a little more light as to how to go about securing that type of placement so others can learn from you. My view remains the same - do not do any 'dead end' job for more than a year maximum. If it isn't working out abroad, return home to Nigeria and try to make something of it. Yes the competition is tough, yes opportunities are limited, but from a philosophical perspective, it is better to be in your own country if things aren't working out for you than to be outside and suffer both the consequences of being a foreigner as well as being in dire straits financially. @ Ajanle I am not very surprised at the BofA issue - the 'buy American' clauses in the TARP were bound to lead to these type of protectionist activities. I just wonder how long the US can maintain that without suffering some competitive advantage loss. That said, the situation is not markedly different in other countries. I recently spoke to a old classmate of mine in the UK who is job searching and is graduating in a few months. He told me that a number of employers have stated that they will only take UK citizens or at worst EU citizens. I agree completely with you that moving abroad or back home should be a holistic strategy, not measured in naira and kobo terms only, but at the same time, current economic pressures will always tend to distort reasoning/planning. The key is finding time to THINK outside of this constant barrage of bills, family commitments and demands. On a general note, economic contraction always leads to some protectionism, but even in this market, jobs are available - we need to work harder and make ourselves more distinct in the marketplace in order to get jobs. |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by bigboyslim(m): 3:45pm On Jul 18, 2009 |
My story is not very different from most of the earlier posters' I left Nigeria for my Masters in the US in JAN 2007. I have since completed my Masters and still yet to get a job 7 months after. I am also considering going back home seriously because it's really tough surviving in the US without a job. For most that don't know, as international students in the US, u are not legally authorized to accept any off campus employment (excluding internships which are tough to land anyway) and after completion of your degree, you must seek employment in a field relevant to your area of study. These past few years have been the toughest times of my life. Like previous posters have mentioned, going for studies abroad is draining financially, emotionally, mentally and in all other aspects you can think of. I know the story could have been different if not for the economic meltdown but the reality is bitter. Its sad to think that without connections I might have to go back and write aptitude tests again, with 4,000 people competing for a handful of positions. My advice to prospective Masters candidates particularly those interested in coming to the US is to think deeply about it and find out as much information about the situation of things in the country you intend to study in before proceeding. I think most times, we worry too much about school applications and visa applications and just getting out of Nigeria and push the most crucial aspects to the background. At the end of the day, its a very risky decision you are making. I am not trying to discourage people from following their dreams but I feel that if i'm spending so much on an education I would like to have at least a 90% guarantee of a good job in a field of my choice before or shortly after graduation. 1 Like |

@ Ancient 1 Good to know u are back .What an audacious move u made thou. However,in my candid opinion I reckon 2 months might not be quite ample enough to get a decent deal back @ home. That said,u gt ur reasons certainly. Have got friends u waited for as long as 6 months, while others were fortunate to get within a short time without major links. Its all about preparing financially and psychologically for that turbulent period. Its more of a recruitment freeze everywhere,Lllyods bank are laying off 1200 staff; Lest u forget,US isnt better at d moment. Keep intensifying the search and u will be alright in no time. I can attest to that vehemently, however I am not ruling out gidi at some point. |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by axeman85(m): 10:03pm On Jul 29, 2009 |
I personally think its just based on different individuals because i have at least 3 friends which i know personally none of them have masc all na bsc and they never did any tangible jobs while in the uk and 1 of them got a job end of last year working for skye bank earning about 4.5m per annum around 300- 350k per month as a marketer, entry level, and another works with arik air gets 250k permonth, and the third one gets 7mil fidelity bank, so i just think its a matter of luck and knowing a few people. |

PILOT or CABIN CREW or TICKETING OFFICER GET UR FACTss RIGHT!!!!!!! |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by axeman85(m): 9:46pm On Aug 01, 2009 |
@eryck why would i lie it adds nothing neither does it deduct anything from me or my pocket, i am jst saying what i know is tru. in regards to skye bank at first i tot it was a lie until when i saw it myself. monthly he gets at least 330k per month. and fidelity bank its 7m per annum dont know what it is monthly and finally arik air is cabin crew and he is still in training anyway and he only flies local route, and its definately 250k per month well confirmed, and so before you start trowing accusations at people always be sure of what u r saying. cos if u read my post well i said it depends. and the one in fidelity bank studied in the uk and also has an msc from the uk. |

this thread might just provide me with some useful guidance @kellyhand please why did they refuse you post study work visa i thought it was automatic |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by tunnytox(m): 4:25pm On Aug 25, 2009 |
joxiri: I couldn't agree more, this thread is probably one of the most interesting sicne I started visiting NL @joxiri Post study visa is not automatic, applicants will still need to meet the maintenence fund requirements. A lot of graduates missed out on this opportunity simply because they failed to keep a close tab on the ever changing UK immigration laws. As for me I am presently in the UK on HSMP visa, I am planning to go for my master's next year when I will be able to pay a UK home student fee, Nigeria is a no no for me now not until at least I obtain my UK pali, however some of my friends have left the UK after their MSc and are doing well but some of them too are regreting their decision. I believe its all about weighing your options and if possible have plans A, B , C rather than just one plan. The Post study visa option is good and if you know how to prepare your documents you may be able to change it to HSMP (now Tier 1) this obviously will give you a wider option. the fact remains that once you are stucked in Nigeria without job for up to a year you'll start becoming irrelevent but if you are in the UK even if you are on odd jobs with your post study visa you can establish your own small business change your visa to Tier 1 and have the opportunity of getting a UK passport and eventually a much wider access to the EU job/business market. Good luck |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by joxiri: 1:25am On Aug 26, 2009 |
@tunnytox Omo but its not that easy to switch frm psw to hsmp dont you need like to be making an annual income of £20,000, and besides failing to for instance maintain the £800 maintenance fund in a bank account for 3 months what other reasons can the home office give for refusing psw But more infor on switching frm psw to hsmp wil be very useful tox especially with the laws changina almost every 5 mnths |
Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by tunnytox(m): 1:52pm On Aug 26, 2009 |
joxiri: @joxiri I know its not easy but my bro you can do it there are several loopholes within the rules which you can exploit for your advantage. for instance you can claim income from Nigeria, one of my friends was staying in the UK on PSW visa but at the same time supplying news reports to a newspaper in Nigeria, he was getting paid for this as well and these count towards his income. I also know of another who publishes a small book with less than £1000 in Nigeria the money he makes from this bok counts also toward his earnings. Apart from this you may try to do some work here in the UK like private tutor and get yourself registered with the HMRC as a self employed the income from these too would count toward you earnings. There are so many ways its just that some time we need to wake up as a Nigerian, where there is a will there's a way |

A for me I'll be interested to hear from anyone here in the UK who's doing any Finance job, I had a degree in Accountancy and qualified as an ICAN member since 2001 but since i moved to the UK the best job I could get now is an Admin job with one of the councils, I am hoping that once I get my ACCA qualification things might get better. I believe its much earsier for Engineers and health professionals to get job here but for us Accountants I think its very difficult. If anyone has some useful experiences to share please do. Thanks |
