Mohammadu Buhari has mass appeal among the ordinary Northern citizens. A former major-general in the Nigerian army and one-time Military Head of State of the country between 1983 and 1985, he is seen by many as a statesman, an incorruptible societal figure and a gallant soldier.

Buhari fought gallantly on the federal side during the civil war. Shortly after the war, he was appointed the governor of the defunct Northeastern State. When the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed became the Head of State, Buhari was appointed the Federal Commissioner for Petroleum Resources and Chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In the Second Republic, he was the General officer Commanding (GOC) Third Armoured Division, Jos. On December 31, 1983, Buhari became the Head of State.

Before his regime was truncated by a coup led by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd), he was devoted his time as head of state to the war against corruption and was strongly receptive to the restoration of public discipline.

The Daura-born soldier-turned politician can be considered a veteran presidential candidate. In 2003, Buhari joined the presidential foray. He contested for the presidency in that year on the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Congress (ANPP). In 2007, he also contested against Yar’Adua without success. Yar’Adua later confessed that the poll was severely flawed. In 2011, Buhari also took on Goodluck Jonathan, on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He lost to Jonathan, who went on to become president, but not before his influence contributed to the emergence of CPC administrations in Kano and Nasarawa states in Northern Nigeria.
