Honda accord 95 2.2 vtec engine was poorly managed, at present the engine moves perfectly, runs superb like the engine hasn't lost power doesn't smoke but shorts oil.

Now, I'm torn between changing it's rings or buying a new tokunbo engine.

Advice needed. Thanks

Have you noticed mechanics generally are not machinist? You cannot afford to have a machinist build your engine, although it might be very well built, your best bet if you dont have the skills is a new long block i.e a new engine.

As long as the oil is not shorting due to cracked engine block then getting the rings is the safer option for now since it is not a critical fault. Have you checked to make sure it's not the oil pan that's leaking? If it's not smoking then the oil is not entering the combustion chamber. Verify what's causing the leak.

I'll check the cost for changing the rings and juxtapose with getting a new engine sha. Tho I think the new engine might last longer in the long run

I'm very much interested though mine is a bmw 3 series.. My engine has weak rings it smokes a lot and lack compression.I was told.to buy a tokunbo engine over 120k..

I don't think replacing the rings and other necessary parts shouod cost up to that...why the emphasis of replacing the whole engine?

Sell it and buy a new car.(No joke)
If you can take a risk on a 100k engine (including accessories and labor), then i would advice you to sell add more money and get a better car.
I don't think you can get a 95 engine(20 year old car) with less than 200k miles on the engine(10 miles a year is standard). Almost Every thing in the market is rebuild so its either you are rebuilding or buying a new car.

So you used another engine? OK
You still don't get it. let me break it down for you.

1. 40k for a VTEC engine means it is rebuilt(No doubt).

2. Any petrol engine over 200k is at its last gasp of life (16 year cars average 192k. Sorry the average in US where the supposed engine comes from is 12k/yr)

3. How many more years can you get MAXIMUM UTILITY from a "40K" Engine before it requires rebuilding or buying a rebuilt one.(i guess 1 year from all the post i see)

4. So you didn't learn your lesson from the first engine you bought(assuming you bought the VTEC).

5. A 20 year old car is a heavy liability. Almost every rubber is worn out( Hoses, seals, bushings etc.).

Its all up to you bro, i am just giving you and advice.

I understand you bro. Like I said the present engine was mismanaged (service wasn't regular) aside that I'm sure the engine wouldn't have had issues now.

I like new cars too bro, I'm getting there soon

I love your analysis, but most tokumbor engines are from stripped/accidented cars and some still not had their timing belts replaced (less than 100,000km) so if he's searches diligently he will get a good engine. I replaced that same spec of engine 4years ago for a friend and its still doing strong.

See the price on eBay. Avg is $500. So $500 X 180 Naira= N90,000 That is minus shipping and taxes. I don't know how they are getting the engine for less than $250. Even junk yards wouldn't sell at that price (Info from a reliable source).

I will not advice you perform this task all by yourself if you are a not a trained professional in this act beside you will need the wiring diagram to execute this also you will the right equipment to confirm the integrity if your cooling system or else it i will spell more disaster to your engine if there is any flaws in the reconnection
Call autologic @ 08061166316 to help you reconnect all your cooling system to factory default
Autologic has the equipments .

I admire your great insights.
please does this apply also to our local accidented/striped cars? the cost difference is about 40k from tokunbo engine here.

I may need to replace a 2004 accord engine that smokes(only above 4rpm)and shorts oil although its very fine under 110kmh limits and never with A.C.

Does not apply to a Nigerian used engine.

The odds that you will geat an engine in pristine conditions are slim when it comes to Nigerian used engines.

Thats why we have maintenance, if faulty components on a car are replaced it will last long, it is only in this part of the world people change cars every 6 months and the vehicles dont even last up to 2yrs bad maintenance culture indeed.

A mechanic who advices his customers to buy a new car because he cannot fix an engine is incompetent. angry
