The yes that nigeria voted was more for self preservation than for any other purpose

Rubbish post.Taking panadol for another man's headache.
So you care about the Palestine dream. What about the nigeria dream. As if Nigerians are enjoying life in the real sense of the world.

OP it is apparent that you do not know that the US has the power to veto whatever the outcome was.

Nigeria did the best thing by remaining neutral.

Our interests and peace at home superceds the interests and peace of Palestine.

That was the calculation that changed the equation!

I hate reading opinions of uninformed people. You can't expect Nigeria to just say yes without considering the long term effect on her socioeconomic status.. You can't expect us to soil over hundred years of relationship with the United States, and align with Palestinian government.

What do we stand to gain from Palestine?

A Nigerian Yes vote wont mean much since the US voted against it.

Abstention was tactical and the right way to go. For the first time , we got it right and stayed out of complicated geopolitics.

Thanks for this post. A lot of half educated people running around here. Simple research they can't even do.

The rumours are already flying(on Twitter), that Nigeria was promised that they can export oil to USA for the whole 2015 if they vote NO, since that is a big promise, the US negotiated that they can get some drones via Israel if they just keep quite, so the drone thing is REAL.

For your information, USA produces its own crude oil and dumped Nigeria oil import few months back.

If this rumour is true then Nigeria did the right thing.Bro it's national interest first o.

How could Nigeria vote in favour of a free Palestine when the same Nigeria is occupying Biafra?

Biafra should get her independence first, then Nigeria can go and vote a yes!

Jonathan is a wise man!

I support Nigerians stand. The resolution was one sided wothout due consideration of the other party. We don't need more "bad belle" when we know that the vote is just symbollic without no power of enforcement. I hope no islamic cleric would start saying rubbish in other to incite violence. Good move by this government. OP u no sabi anything.

What of UK who are sympathetic to the palestine course, didn't they abstain, why single out Nigeria. I like this vote because for the first time Nigeria didn't vote because of religious sentiment, this government voted due to national interest and that is how to run a country.

That kills the whole purpose, change of heart at last minute, what are you, I mean, you made a promise, you told the world, then you met the US in last minute throug nudge and a wink by that US lady at the Security Council, and you keep quite, that is a big shame.

Nigeria would have made BIG headlines if they have voted YES in favour, for their brave and strong position in matters that count.

so you preferred nigeria making the headlines than the happiness of her people

if America keeps to their promise .....Then a great 2015 awaits nigerians

Its a waste of time. Even if the resolution gets passed.....it will still be vetoed by the US! With or without Nigeria votes....the resolution is dead on arrival.
Even without US veto....isrealis will not honor d resolution. The UN can not enforce such resolution as well.
Here's someone who thinks!!

People really don't understand the country Israel is. Don't they wonder why she keeps getting away with so many atrocities from war crimes to that Gaza Humanitarian Flotilla incident which the ICC investigated and said "there is strong evidence a war crime was committed by Israel, BUT the don't intend to prosecute the case"!! It is the most obvious indicator that Israel as a country is beyond the jurisdiction of any world body!!

The only country Israel can listen to is the United States, period! Anything outside that is just a puff of hot air. Someone once described the country as the 51st state of the United States. US can never take any stand that hurts that country.

As for Nigeria's stand, well, can you blame us? I mean, what is there to gain by flexing muscles in the eye of the press when you've got a lot to lose in the end in terms of aid monies, trade and investment, especially now that the economy is taking a serious beating from plummeting oil prices?? As long as we keep depending on the US and her foreign partners over which she exerts enormous influence for forex, we will keep doing their bidding! Forget the gay marriage stuff, that is small potatoes, this is BIG deal!!

If a country as powerful as Russia could feel so much heat from US' actions, how much more Nigeria?? As much as I wouldave loved to see a vote in favour of Palestinian state-hood understanding the horrendous crimes that have been committed against them under the occupation, I still feel we must first protect our own interest before that of any other country.

And if you ask me, the vote would only be symbolic (just as the guy I quoted pointed out), and any decision taken which doesn't resonate well with US' foreign policy will be vetoed by them in the end. So what's the point voting in their favour??

When we become much more economically independent, we'd have the leverage to take strong decisions in matters of this nature. We certainly haven't reached that point yet.

You are obviously trying to make a big mountain out of a mole. Nigeria did what she did for her best interest. If Nigeria voted yes, Boko Haram could use that against Nigeria and demand for State hood.

Do not be deceived even if Nigeria has voted for the state of Palestine it would not have been enough because America as a permanent member of the UN has vetoed against Palestine.

International diplomacy is about securing the interest of a nation amongst their peers. Nigeria made a right decision. Let me ask a simple question;

Between Isreal and Palestine, who will you prefer Nigeria to have as a friend?

We have our problems as a nation, and we will have to protect our interest as much as possible. We need our oil to be sold and arms to tackle internal agression. America can buy our oil and Isreal can supply us needed weapons. The Palestinians cannot give us anything. This was used as a bargaining chip.

Politics is cruel. If you don't want to play dirty, stay away from it.
Nigeria's foreign policy has always sided with the palestinians.we have always voted in favour of the palestinians, why the last minute change of heart?

I am reading a lot of cowardly statement, there is such a thing as doing what is right, than acting like pilate and cowardly dodging an alleged complicated issue, how complicated is the issue? Coward die a thousand deaths! Jonathan and his supporters symbolise a cowardly Nigeria, a nigeria where people cannot stand up for what is right!

Re: NIGERIA Told To KEEP Quite at Last Minute at the Security Council this evening by Nobody: 1:13pm On Dec 31, 2014
Nigeria’s position on the complex Israel and Palestine issue has been that of neutrality for years, in the belief that any decision must be attained through negotiations.

Nigeria has maintained that policy in what analysts believe is informed by the government’s sensitivity to many factors including, not wanting to be seen as supporting Palestine’s Hamas, or opposing the United States.

A major factor also is the religious angle back home, with many Nigerian Muslims supporting Palestine, while there is also the Christianity affiliation between Nigeria and Israel.

The best decision ever.

Nigeria stands to gain nothing nor lose anything by voting yes or no.

Nigeria has its own problems too and a no or yes votes from other nations has nvr solved our problems either.

Neutrality at this point in time was the best move after all China has always been neutral in most issue's they stand to gain nor lose anything so why take sides?

Every nation did what it wanted same as Nigeria so why the noise.

Will a yes vote from Nigeria stop suicide bombers in Palestine from killing their fellow innocent citizens?

Will a yes vote from Nigeria stop Israel from bombing Palestine everytime a rocket is fired into Israel?

Russia voted yes yet they invaded and annexed a part of Ukraine till date so who is fooling who?

Lots of dummies here on NL
