The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, said on Tuesday that Nigerians would be shocked if told about the mind-boggling corruption perpetrated by the current leadership in the country.
The Speaker, who stated this at the formal inauguration campaign of the APC presidential candidate in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, lamented that Nigeria does not deserve the leadership it has at this time.
He said it was one of the reasons he dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, last October for the APC.
Mr. Tambuwal, who is the governorship candidate of the APC in Sokoto State in the February 28 election, said the mindboggling information on the rot in the country was obtained by the House during its oversight functions.
“I am impressed by what I am seeing here today. This is a clear testimony that Rivers and indeed the good people of Nigeria will come out en masse and overwhelmingly vote the candidates of the APC,” he said.
“When I defected to the APC, many people were surprised that how can I leave a ruling party to an opposition party?
“On the privileged position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives that I presided over for three and half years, we oversaw the current government and what we saw and what we are still seeing is mind-boggling and from the information available to us, we don’t deserve the current type of leadership that we have at the centre and Nigeria deserves better leadership as is by the grace of God and will be exemplified by General Muhammadu Buhari. His records speak for him.”
The Speaker said the country would develop faster with the opposition APC than with the ruling PDP, noting that the Jonathan-led administration was not serious about governance.
Also speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun expressed joy with the election of Mr. of Buhari as the APC presidential candidate.
He said the candidate was deliberately chosen to move the country forward.
Mr. Oyegun reeled out Mr. Buhari’s achievements to include his fight against corruption and indiscipline in Nigeria which he said during his (Buhari) administration sanitized most Nigerians.
“Train of change is setting out from Rivers State. Great people of Rivers State (and Nigeria) are you happy, who is your president – Buhari, the crowd chorused. Let me present to you the President-in-waiting in Federal Republic of Nigeria. Do you want electricity, do you want better security, do you want to wipe out corruption?” he said.
“Then, take a good look at General Buhari. He is as straight in character as his figure is in figurative terms.
Take a look at his vice. These two people were deliberately chosen. Gen. Buhari was ahead of his time. His time has finally come. If you want corruption wiped out, who do you vote for? (Buhari, crowd chorused). If you want discipline in this country, who do you vote for? (Buhari, the crowd again chorused)”.
While urging Nigerians to vote for the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Oyegun also urged Rivers people to vote at the state level for the APC gubernatorial candidate, Dakuku Peterside.
During the flag-off, party governorship flag was presented to Mr. Peterside, confirming him as the party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State for the upcoming governorship poll.
Also before the presidential campaign flag-off, the APC unveiled its campaign team structure with Mr. Buhari as campaign chairman nationwide and his vice presidential running mate, Prof. Osibanjo as vice chairman.
Others include the governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi as the Director-General of presidential campaign organization with two deputy directors-general whose names are yet to be revealed.
Others were a vice chairman for the North and South respectively with Zonal Coordinators who are APC State Governors across the country.
Some of those in attendance included, Chris Ngige, Nasir El-Rufai, Audu Ogbe, former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Tony Momoh and Governors Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State and Ibikunle Amosun.

Buhari' s entry into politics is going to damage the culture of corruption currently existing. Jonathan said this week that he and was going to expose the mistakes of previois governments. This was an obvious reference to Obj, IBB and Buhari regimes. Then let them do the needful. I'm tired of of these allegations. I don't blame them, GEJ made it easy for them by working with saboteurs and coupled with the opposition's determination to move him by all means.

I thought in a democracy, the legislature is supposed to be a check on the executive. But the Nigerian legislature has been reduced to whining and complaining without ability to perform their legitimate function. They are more concerned with sitting allowance, constituency projects and special visitations to ministries and parastatals.

In a sane country president Jonathan would have been impeached and prosecuted long ago.

The so called bill signed by GEJ was not enough to bring out the truth about PEJ's medical trip abroad until she confessed about it, not enough to force NNPC to open their books, not enough to show up the PWC audit report on NNPC, not enough to make public the reports and white papers of different committees and panels set up by this same government, so what FOI law are you talking about. So called states that you claim did not sign such bills place almost all the info you need on their websites.
