Recently my ex has been trying to maintain a cordial relationship but to me, the whole thing is kind of your-pet-dying-and-you-still-keeping-it kind of situation.

I think it is a good idea BUT it depends on how the relationship ended. And set boundaries or else it could get awkward real fast.

Like almost everything else in this world, you can only judge on a case by case basis.

What happened to break up your relationship? What is he doing now? How does he relate with you anytime he keeps in touch - as a nice acquaintance? Or like a guy trying to toast a girl?

I tried to maintain a friendly relationship with my ex all those years ago until she began blaming me of betraying her (she left me, not the other way round) and then she started stalking me. I had to sever all forms of communication with her. Over a decade now, she still tries the guilt thing on me -"if you loved me then even though we are not together, we should still be as close as we were...."
