A number of American adults were asked to fill in a blank map of Africa, and the results speak volumes.

Oftentimes, the world community notices and reacts to tragedies that occur in the developed countries, but would ignore terrible events in Africa and Nigeria. For instance, the massacre in Borno State that happened at the beginning of January 2015, went totally unnoticed. Boko Haram murdered more than 2,000 people in a 3 days. In comparison, deaths of 17 persons in France from the hands of Muslim radicalists got overwhelming social media support. Close to four million people gathered for a solidarity march through Paris.

It demonstrates the predisposition of the global community to double standards. Between January 7 and January 11, the murders in France generated over 50 times more news stories worldwide than tragedies that happen daily in Nigeria.

Africa is usually perceived as a distant, chaotic continent devoid of familiar faces.

To demonstrate the lack of understanding, a geographic experiment was conducted. American adults were asked to label a blank map of Africa.

Here are the results:

Well, talk of monks and cowboy connotations associated with the word 'howdy' required a additional element of electricity before I could start believing you may be NL's electric monk grin. Here's the first chapter from one of my all time favorite books for clarification (or further confusion);

Flyte falls?

Hope 'twas you falling for Mr Flyte...and not the type that makes one want to fall off a cliff.

Lol, am no electric monk. But have been known to send some stray current through a few female body parts.

Not read fiction in years. So what happened to our malfunctioning monk?

Yeah, like falling bird.

Stray currents, eh? Why, you must mean the synaptic awakening of the female mind; arousing girls over the land from spiritual rigor mortis, of course grin

The electric monk has a small but significant role in the story. He is able to drop his belief that everything is pink, and then time travel (via a portal) to earth into a Professor (at Cambridge's) bathroom. I'll say no more lipsrsealed

Have a good day yo!

You don't even need to go that far. If you ask Nigerians to do the same on an African map, they'd only be able to point out Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Madagascar. As for Europe, na long thing ooo.

Kids in this century/millenium can only point out MTV, Movie stars, and Football players

Same way some Nigerians are also daft. Daftness is universal. You'd be amazed at the responses nigerians also give to simple questions. How many Nigerians know anything outside of Lagos and Abuja?

Sad truth! I wonder if things are getting better or worse with the reliance on the internet for information. We needn't take the trouble to learn because the answers are always there. My friend (Indian) had no idea where the carribean was, and for me (Caribbean) it was shocking. Ask her to point out Nigeria lipsrsealed. Do we really need to know? I wonder.

If my aim is to find daft Africans I can easily do it as well. Are you telling me all the people in the villages all over are well aware of everything going on around?

Obviously America is massive and if you questions people in non major cities, they may not be aware of things outside America. Same applies to Nigeria as well. Go to villages and ask people such questions. Even go to secondary schools in lagos and you will be surprised at some of the responses you get

Yeah , dat maybe true.

But why are we comparing a country like Nigeria where the government expenditure per her is close to zero with a country whose education expenditure per head is probably $10k per annum?

For Nigerians they have an excuse, cant think of one for an American.
Re: What The Average Americans Really Know About Nigeria/africa by ttmacoy: 6:39pm On Jan 23, 2015
I disagree. Government had per head has nothing to do with being aware of where all countries in Africa are placed. Even I who grew up in naija can't place all African countries and I'm sure that doesn't mean I am daft.

It's just that I don't like when people use stereotypes. I agree Americans can be a bit close minded about the world outside America, but they have all they need. The country is massive so you can holiday all your life in America and still not go everywhere.
