Who Names The Child? by dayokanu(m): 9:22pm On Dec 28, 2008
Who names the child.

The father, the mother, The fathers parents, the mothers parents or whom.

In my own culture a lot of people including family friends contribute names but the fathers name is made to stick.

Same here.
This is one of the cultures I'm protesting against, it's about time we abolish such things.
The mother and the father of the baby needs to pick the baby's name.
The mother should be given a choice if she wants the name her husband gave her child or not.
Because some men have no taste whatever!!! angry angry

I say the the parents of the baby should give a name to their child/ren
Re: Who Names The Child? by Nobody: 9:42pm On Dec 28, 2008
As much as I know: tha grannies usually give the native name, while the parents decide on the english name. That's how it was done in my case. don't know about yours.
Re: Who Names The Child? by iice(f): 9:49pm On Dec 28, 2008
My parents are not very traditional. They do what they want to do cheesy
Both of them named all of us and although our grandparents suggested our native names, it was up to my parents to pick which they liked.
So yeah i think family can suggest but the power should reside with the parents.

But aint your name cool? I think it is. I am sure your dad, mum or Grandparents have a great taste. kiss kiss kiss kiss
Left to you, You would have named yourself "Malia" or Siena.

@Michelin,
In my part of Nigeria(Yoruba) most people go by their native names.  For example I dont have an English name just like my other siblings

It will be my sole decision period.  after all I reserve the rights to the pregnancy for a whole 9 months. I may decide not to have the baby . It's my call and not his'.

Assuming I marry an hausa man and he wants our son to be named Kwankwaso or some other ugly hausa name, you really want me to go ahead with that and let my son be called 'aboki' for the rest of his life?

It's true sha, not saying that the guy should make the decision on his own, just that the two of you should dicuss and choose na, you tell him your reasons for not wanting a certain name vice versa, don't just be set on 'I'm making the decision and that's final', keep on thinking that way and. . . .well, Karma has said it all lipsrsealed
Re: Who Names The Child? by dayokanu(m): 4:57am On Dec 29, 2008
In most cases the father gets to name the child. As much as most women would like to have it their way If you want to use the fathers surname, you have to consult with your husband and agree on a name.

Earthmama, The best way to get your wish is to marry a crackhead who doesnt care if you name the child adidas or jezebel. The child can even use your maiden name.
Another option is to go for artificial insemination hopefully you would get an Arabian or Aborigines semen tongue tongue tongue tongue

Re: Who Names The Child? by Jarus(m): 11:51am On Dec 29, 2008
In our family,as is the case in many Yoruba families, the parents, grandparents, and other important family members make inputs in the naming. In my case, I was given Suraj by my father on the advice of Islamic clerics, I was given Oyetunji by my Aunty, Abidoye by my Granny, and Adio(oriki-praise name) by my paternal Grandma etc.
Most of us are named this way.
Re: Who Names The Child? by arramyjay: 12:18pm On Dec 29, 2008

No one contributed names or sent names from the villa.
My husband gave our daughter her first name which is in the bible. I picked her middle name. My parents use her middle name always probably because its a native name. His parents call her by her biblical name.
