Whatt's all this thrash written up here , forget abt all those how many population re speaking the language u can't possibly put an igbo language ontop of the most widely knwn nd spoken languagein africa yor...even till south american's country such as brazil nd cuba it's widely knwn there..take a look for example at the way our language are being generally commercialised nd indicating the extinction in other language.I won't restart this point but so to say my fact's is yoruba is the most widely spoken nd used in nigeria as far as am concerend simply because it's the general language in lagos the most commercialised city in west africa.even the igbo's must succumb to it's usage for their daily survival there.

We must call a goat a goat and a sheep a sheep, we can not be bias.

There are many ethnic groups that speak Hausa including my Fulani ethnic group, the Bolewas, the Ngas (Hausa is close to their language anyways), the Tangale, the Vute/Bute, the Zarma, etc. and all these mentioned groups are not even Hausa. These groups speak Hausa as a second language but fluently. Yoruba is only spoken for the most part amongst Yoruba people but no other ethnic group speaks it as a 2nd language fluently. Hausa is by far the most spoken language in Nigeria, whether we like it or not.

Why is it the case? Is it due to the "simplicity" of the Hausa people, is it due to the fact that Hausas are very welcoming people and accept others into their Hausawa culture.

Although I'm a Fulani man and not a Hausa, I can vouch for the fact that there are relatives of mine who don't even speak Hausa. However, Hausa is very much a lingua franca in many parts of Nigeria.

I wish Fulfulde (Fulani language) was the most spoken, but sadly we can't have it our way. But the truth is Hausa is the most spoken language in Nigeria. We must remember that the majority of Nigeria's 250 ethnic groups are found in the "Core North". Most of these other ethnicities understand and speak Hausa very well.

I'm glad you like the Hausa language, I'm not really a fan of it as I prefer Fulfulde, but I respect the Hausa people because even BBC promotes their language. They are not afraid to say "no" to white people that they refuse to speak their language. I admire those who are proud of their respective cultures.

Igbo language is on the verge of extinction.
With the rate younger Igbo generations drop the langauge I doubt if Igbo will survive next 100yrs.
Was on a wedding ceremony of my colleague who is Igbo, I was ashamed of how the parents were happy and amazed that the guy can express himself with shaky Igbo.
Also I paid a visit to my uncle, on greeting his kids in Igbo, my uncle was like I should use English, you know they don't understand Igbo.

Sadly I have seen this happen too....a lot
I am Igbo btw
I looove the way Yorubas and Hausas speak their languages, everywhere, anywhere, anyhow

There is evidence that the Hausa population figures have been exceedingly exagerrated beyond actuality to give the North the sense of higher population and power domination in Nigeria, and adding the Fulfude population and other northern minority tribes to the actual numbers of the Hausa was a ploy by the colonial masters to give the north the 'dominating' advantage. Hausa is widely spoken all over West Africa, and when all speakers are put together we obtain a high number, no doubt, but the actual population of native hausas speakers (those who own the language) themselves in Nigeria is smaller than the Hausa-speaking population of Nigeria (including the Fula and minority tribes).

We have really come of age and Nigeria sorely needs to have accountable and verifiable census information. The population census figures of Nigeria needs to be recalculated. For over 40 years, census figures of Nigeria have been crooked up, invented and thrown out to the masses to believe what is false. A thorough and proper census needs to be carried out in Nigeria and afer which you will be very surprised to know the actual population figures of tribes in Nigeria and which tribe turns out to be the largest in population.

I think the 3 majority groups of Nigeria over-exaggerate their populations (well maybe Hausa do not since they typically have lots of children, no offence my Hausa neighbours). However, Yoruba and igbo people don't typically have many children, so where is this huge population increase coming from?

Hausas have high rate of child and infant mortality rates, which more than cancels out their high birth rate.

The Igbo monogamous setting, ensures proper child health care, translating to reduced infant and child mortality rates and even maternal mortality rate.

Wikipedia goes by population census quotes they obtain from census figures of Nigeria which we know are highly flawed and fabricated. When a thorough and sincere census of Nigeria is conducted you will be shocked to find out the actual figures of tribes in Nigeria. Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba may still emerge top 3 as expected, however, the ordering in desceding order will shock you.

Below are population census figures of Igbo and Yoruba tribes in as early as 1921. You will be shocked to find out that Igbo were greater in population than the Yoruba.

Well by population Igbo maybe 2nd (I don't know as Yoruba are bountiful too).

The thing is that respectively, Both Igbo and Yoruba people don't have as much offspring as the Hausa. I don't know if that is due to education or the mentality of being "modernised".

With that said, you are right about the fact that many people who speak Hausa are not even pure Hausa themselves. The number of pure Hausa is unknown really. You have a cluster of smaller minority groups who often want to be clustered with the Hausa, like the Bolewas, Ngas, Tangale, Buras, Ga'anda people, etc. etc. etc. I still live by the statement that the only true Hausa today can be found in the republic of Niger (near areas such as Zinder, Maradi, etc.) and some core parts of Nigeria. However, it is hard to find a Hausa who isn't mixed with a neighbouring ethnic group. The way Hausas are often clustered with Fulanis kind of disgusts me sometimes honestly because they can't differentiate from an Eagle and an Ostrich.

With that said, I also wanted to bring to your attention that many Igbo people of your generation and younger are not caring much for the Igbo language anymore. I've met several Igbo people (work, here in Nigeria, and even in school in the United States) and many of them couldn't even speak Igbo language......I mean no offence, but I believe that any person who can't speak their native language is a disgrace. I say that about everyone Fulani people especially in the North West who can't speak 1 kobo of Fulfulde.

Nigeria's census is indeed a huge issue and needs to be readdressed. But as long as corruption plays a huge part of Nigeria, it may never be even in our young lifetimes.

Non politicized stat bro. Election voters data is politicized. Place of residence takes pre eminence over place of Origin. And since Igbos migrate a lot, many Igbos get counted as SW and Northern residents, and not as SE or SS residents.

The stats like the type jamb use to show, that makes use of place origin in place instead of place of residence , tells a better story.

You need to do a further research yourself to find out that in precolonial Nigeria, Igbo had more population than Yoruba, by an exceeding margin of 1.8 million. JAMB, WAEC, First school leaving certificate exam statistics all show the Igbo to be higher than Yoruba in statistics given. Go to the south east, it is the most densely populated area in the entire West Africa. Travelling to the east and crossing the Niger bridge and on arrival in Onitsha you will notice a surge in population and you will see people seething everywhere like flies. Going inside further into Awka, Owerri, Aba, Enugu and you will be met with teeming Igbo population. The Igbo are found in south east + Delta, Rivers, Benue state, Kogi, Akwa Ibom, tiny bits of Bayelsa and Cross River state. All bia-speaking Igbo clans might actually be the majority in the Niger Delta region. Leaving the south east and going to Lagos, Igbo can be comfortably said to be number 2 in population after the native Yorubas, rivalling the natives by not much of margin in population. Go to Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, and most states in Nigeria, the Igbo population comes 2nd after the population of the natives in most states in Nigeria. These factors strongly point to favourable population statistics for the Igbo people.

Having 6 states + stakes in 2 other states does not automatically mean that the inhabiting tribe is more populated. Land mass does not equate to population size. The Yoruba seem to be concentrated mostly in the south west region and a proper census taken of the Yoruba in SW, including an extra 100,000 to account for those in other states of Nigeria will give you the actual Yoruba population whereas you would need to add up all the seething Igbo population in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Benue, Jos, Katsina, Ibadan etc + densely populated South East + Delta Igbo + Rivers Igbo + Benue Igbo (approximately 1 million spread out over 300 villages in Benue state) + Akwa-Ibom Igbo etc to obtain the true Igbo population figure which would actually shock you than you imagined.

Not to forget the about 2 million Igbo people who were slaughtered during the civil war.

Sowie bro. The nature of the North(hausa-fulani) terrain, does not support the kind of population figures the north keeps cooking up. A comparision of the north's bogus and cooked up figures with the population of countries with similar terrain like Mali, Chad,Cameroun, etc, exposes the fraud of the north's population. And a simple view of northern Nigeria on google earth, shows empty landmass with little human population,as is obtainable in Chad,Cameroun,Mali, etc.

How long can the north keep up with this her population fraud?

Just because a particular ethnic group may have more people by head count/population count, that does not correlate to the fact that that particular ethnic group has as many speakers as another ethnic group.

Population of an ethnic group <> Population of speakers from that ethnic group.

Uggh please don't call it Hausa and Fulani terrain, as those 2 groups are not the only groups found in the North. This is a strong misconception by many a Nigerian. You may think those areas are uninhabitable but people do live in those areas....Cameroon is just like Nigeria terrain wise fyi. Northern Cameroon = Northern Nigeria and Southern Cameroon is much like Southern Nigeria. Yes, Northern Nigeria is very arid and desert-like like Mali, Chad and Niger, however those places have a plethora of ethnic groups.

Also, another misconception (though I blame the Fulani of the NorthWest) is that Hausa and Fulani are one group. We definitely are not (not to sound bigoted towards the Hausa). Don't get me wrong I like Hausa people, I just want people to be able to differentiate between linguistic and cultural differences.
