#BringBackOurGirls
300 days since the girls were taken by BOKO HARAM! 300 days since OUR girls went missing.
For those of you wondering why #BringBackOurGirls was asking the NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT to do more to rescue them, here is a Gentle Reminder of the timeline of events and missteps;

*14 April, 2014: 270+ girls kidnapped by Boko Haram from their schools.
*19 April: The military announces that some of the girls have been freed and later RETRACTS it.
*4 May: President Jonathan speaks publicly about them for the FIRST TIME (an astonishing 2 weeks after) while blaming the heart-broken parents for not “co-operating” with the security forces.
*17 October 2014: In a spectacular episode of International embarrassment, the Nigerian Government prematurely announces that the girls will be released as a truce had been reached. International and local media and the world watch in horror as they had apparently been talking to the wrong folks!!

In the meantime, the government and its cronies accuse the opposition of being behind the #BringBackOurGirls movement and repeatedly try to shut the peaceful protests down in Abuja, some of them insist that the kidnappings were faked (in spite of pictures of the girls revealed and their parents eventually coming out) and Amnesty international reveals that the military had advanced warnings of the attacks.

These are the FACTS! Not made up!
Now, supporters of the government are quick to draw comparisons between Nigerians’ reactions and citizens’ reactions in France and the US. They say we should not criticise our government but come together to fight the terrorists in UNITY. And indeed they are right! BUT, Leadership should inspire! After 9/11, George W. Bush said “Make no mistake: The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.” President Jonathan said we should “get used” to terrorism. Francois Hollande did not INSPIRE unity against the Charlie Hebdo attacks by accusing the opposition. After the horrific ISIS “Jordan pilot execution”, King Abdullah II left a meeting with Obama in Washington DC and IMMEDIATELY flew back home, not go off to dance at some political rally!
LEADERSHIP INSPIRES Folks!!

If the supporters and hangers-on of the government should simply realise this and stop defending every inaction baselessly, then we can be headed in the right direction. So yes we are ready to fully support the government as soon as they start to take the right steps to BRING BACK OUR GIRLS!!

So we must not stop demanding for more action to bring the girls back. They are YOUR daughters. Don’t FORGET about me if I ever get kidnapped. Please don’t. While we pray for the girls wherever they are, we MUST not stop SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS!! Our troops are the young men and women who put down their lives to make us safe, even when they may be ill equipped and demotivated. They put down their lives for a country that has not been fantastic to them and is arguably not worth dying for. They are HEROES and we must SUPPORT OUR TROOPS always.
