Hello fellow nairalander,
I was just wondering if the warships commissioned by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is really worth celebrating. For now, I am sure that two of those warships are obsolete and were given to Nig free of charge, but Fed govt did refurbishing on it, my thought now is can a warship which has finished its meaningful service life, now refurbished face the reality of insurgency or perhaps oil theft whichever purpose it wants to serve .
On the other hand my president talked more on using this warship to fight insurgency and not oil theft, so can d warship in lagos fight insurgency in the north? The northerners are not even surrounded by sea, so I don't see any correlation btw the warship in lagos and the insurgency in the north.
The name of one of the warships is NNS OKPABANA, so you can google and do research on it, and also you can check Wikipedia for history. These obsolete warships they give are not useful to them any longer, and should nt warrant undue attention as they were transferred here to b parked, Nns thunder enjoyed same attention in d past and what has been done with it , so why the commissioning now or as usual it's still the political point? If it is, then this one to me is nt worth it.
You can kindly add the name of the two other warships if you knw as I would like to check their history too, my pple, pls let us reason together.

Let's say you're right,

Are you better off with none at all? Or is it better the way the number of your warships is increasing.

Instead of hating, appreciate what you have!

Thanks for the observation Ops. I ran into the same information and I was baffled.
Is it that Nigeria can't afford the latest state of the art warship or our Navy is just backward?
Why do we like fairly used so much? Fairly used phone, cars, electronics, clothings, weapons and now warships? And we're celebrating it as achievements? Dem use Tokunbo swear for us?

OP something must be seriously amiss. Of all the national and international media correspondences that attended the ceremony, you are the only one reporting about the obsolescence of the warships. It is either you are a more objective reporter and investigator or . . .

the truth is this: what is worth doing at all is worth doing well. it is better to commission just a naval ship with all world-class accessories than commissioning fifty that cant supply the fire power of one. my humble submission tho!

Chai, so it was a 1967 ship Jona came to commission with so much fanfare?

Ship that has been used and used by the US, they needed place to park the carcass and decided Nigeria was the ideal junkyard for tokunbo products.

May God rewrite our story oh.

The Nigerian Navy has recently expanded its fleet of warships with a former United States Coast Guard cutter.
The vessel NNS Okpabana, once named USCGC Gallatin, entered Nigerian waters on January 2 for its formal reception in Lagos. Prior to joining the Navy’s fleet, the vessel underwent a $8.5 million refurbishment.
According to defenceWeb, NNS Okpabana is the second Hamilton class cutter donated to Nigeria by the US.

The vessel will be used to combat piracy, oil theft, smuggling, illegal fishing and arms smuggling.

The ship was donated by the USA, GEJ didnt say he bought a new ship , dont really get your point undecided undecided undecided

The truth is that most Navy warship in the World can be used or refurbished to act as New, for the fact thaat the warship was manufactured in the 60s does not in Anyway discredit it from doing modern warfare, the Main weaponry of a warship is its Canon and its ability to Lunch Torpedo which all worship does, Even the great America and Britain still use such warship, the Reason that America Gave us one is bbecause they hv many and Okpabana is not used.

Seriously,
some people's heads are decorative pieces f wearing of hats , glasses etc...
this is a brainless thread.

@o.p, the F91 stealth opv is also obsolete abi??
or is it the enlarged, upgraded gunboat nns sagbama which is still currently in use by the supplier, the Chinese navy?

even the cutter class nns okpabana, was laid off when the usn embarked on an upgrading of their coast guard fleet and that doesn't in Any way make it obsolete.

Do a proper research.

Half knowledge is even more dangerous than ignorance.

Is warship that has been decommissioned due to the expiration of meaningful life where it is coming from worth this refurbishment? secondly, let's agree d money has been spent, should we now go to the mountain top and be shouting abt achievement when in real sense we all knw that Tokunbo can never be like new .
Even Nns prosperity was bought Tokunbo , you can check the link below for her history

dont think u have the technical expertise to say a decommisioned ship cannot be used again...USA donated it and we used 8,5 million dollars to by new weapon systems and electronic for the ship. Like i said dont really get yuur point, lots of countries use refurbished war equipment, i dont think any pirate will like to engage NNS in battle... undecided undecided undecided

Before you crucify me.... I cannot vote for GEJ either in this world or in the world to come.... #sai Buhari.
But the fact is... two of those warships were specifically built for us by a chinese company, im not sure of the other two though.
And warship building isnt a small thing to do.... u cant just go n buy like u buy fighter jets or other things... you have to order to build hence you have to accept if some one decides to dash you one.
Please bro lets be objective in our criticism

keep quite pls,The Tanks Leading the War front and the Game changer against BH is T72 and it is Acquired by GEJ administration and Point of correction, many military equipment can be refurbished and Equipped with modern stuff, the Recently Acquired T72 tanks from Russia,Ukraine and other soviet states was refurbished and no BH bomb can destroy them thats y the army has been making significant gains on the North east war front and the same from Attack Helicopters bought by GEJ, what is the wisdom in buying Brand New Tank with $6m each when u can get a fairy used One for $1.2m,send it back to the manufacturers for refurbishing with $2m bringing the total to $3.2m and save the rest, Nigeria is not the only Nation that buys and Refurbishe, all the military Equipment acquired by Egypt and other nations from United state and Russia are Refurbished.
