Details have emerged on the chain of events that may have led to the death of Bashir, eldest son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Mohammed Bello.
Family sources told THISDAY that Bashir died late Sunday night when his Mercedes E-230 car ran into a broken down truck near Rigachukun bridge along Kaduna-Zaria Road.
THISDAY gathered that 51-year-old Bashir was travelling to Zaria in search of his 14-year-old son, Gidado, who travelled with the family driver without the parents’ knowledge.
The driver’s disappearance with Gidado and the family’s Toyota Camry car, the sources said, had greatly unsettled the late Bashir who scoured several police stations in Kaduna in search of his son.
“Bashir was advised to go to Zaria after all attempts to get the driver on the telephone failed. It was on the way to Zaria that he ran into a broken down truck of one of the major cement companies. We believe the accident occured around 11.30p.m., going by his phone records.
“We didn’t even know of the accident until Monday morning when a good Samaritan called with Bashir’s number to break the tragic news,” the source offered.
THISDAY also gathered that the driver who hails from Danbatta, Kano State, had shortly after receiving news of the accident sent a friend to return the Camry and Gidado.
