$100,000 CAD Saved Up. Is It Enough Start Up Engineering Consulting In Nigeria? by CanadianBigBoy(m): 1:14am On Mar 07, 2015
Travelled to Nigeria in the christmas season of 2014, after 11 years overseas, and it was a blast. Now, I am considering moving back home.

I have over 7 years experience as an engineering specialist, with an MSc in engineering, working for one of the global fortune 200 oil servicing contractors in the Alberta oil sands, Canada.

I am tired of this part of the world. Visiting exposed my eyes to a lot of opportunities. But I do not know where to start from in order to gain a foot hold in the motherland.

I am considering moving back for NYSC, and using the one year service period to establish base in the Niger delta. Possibly, I can start up a consulting coy, or maybe join one of the multinationals, if such an opportunity exist.

If you had $100,000 CAD as start up capital, do you think I would be able to bid for and successfully win contracts? I would prefer to dive deep first into the energy sector with possibly, starting up a small firm to see how it turns out.

Anyone know someone who has made the move back to Nigeria after 11+ years overseas? I achieved my BSc and MSc in electrical engineering @ University of British Columbia, Vancouver if that would be of any advantage, and have been in the work force as an electrical, control systems, and instrumentation specialist, and I pride myself with being good at what I do.

Thanks for any heads-up.

No place like home for sure. Visiting calmed my nerves, and I felt really in place - like the sky is my limit, unlike here, where there seems to be an invisible glass ceiling for immigrants.

If u want to get a job, it should be relatively easy with your experience. You should be able to send applications from where u re. I think its best you get a job in the industry here before u invest.
You can employ me to do some ground work if needed.

Bro forget your money, Identify Businesses you'd like to work with and build professional relationships with decision makers there.

In every part of the world there is an element of who you know and in Nigeria you might just spend $1000 before you get the first contract if you know the right people.

Your experience is a Big plus too.

Seriously i share your passion for your country and he desire to come back, but may be it's a mistake or wrong hopes you have.

First, am no a pessimist so don't look at my advise like someone who's pessimistic. The Nigerian terrain is not too good for business especially contracts except you have real good connections to the source of the contract holders; you need to bribe your way through securing-executing and finally receiving payment for your service, also get ready to be owed for months and probably years and i don't think you want your money or bank loan tired down for that long.

Am thinking u just missed home very much after a very long stay abroad because by the time you spend another 6 months to 1 year i Nigeria, you will definitely get frustrated by the evils happenings in this country, from PHcN power failure to running generator 24/7 with fuel, the bad roads that make you stand the risk of accidents and cause you to repair your car everyday and become a slave to mechanics and insecurity(robbers).

I can continue to list these things, but all am saying is that better to continue to put your skills to use abroad and look for a better investment that is quite secured and in a friendly environment than a dubious and dangerous environment like Nigeria where there's no law. We are in a jungle.

PLEASE MAKE BETTER USE OF YOUR CASH ABROAD THAN COMING TO WASTE IT HERE,THERE ARE WOLFS EVERYWHERE.
But please don't take my advise just listen to your heart and make a better judgement.

Its good more people are thinking of better ways to add value into global Energy challenge.

Getting Oil and gas contracts has little to do with your money, what matters is the details of your work experience in regards to the contract you are pursuing and your ability to showcase/defend your experience. Your cash will only be useful to secure an office accommodation/equipment/2-3 staffs which u hv in excess.

They key thing is your vast work experience in the oil and gas experience before any other thing.

And with your backgroung in electrical, u need to show the field u designed a single line diagram for, managed electrical installation, field production automation using pnuematic/digital (field bus), design softwares, field electrical/automation projects including crude stabilization station/well head auto shut down systems/gas compression station/LPG production station/lng station/tank farms etc uncluding ur onshore and offshore experience.

I will be glad to see your company grow into multinational service company.
