We hear of Okonjo Iweala's continuous lamentation of oil theft, even in the aftermath of reduced militancy due to the Amnesty granted.

Truth is, the oil theft as rampant as Nigerias corruption is activity of those on top. The presidency itself has been accused of engaging in illegal activities, Niger Delta still remains neglected and there has been failings from all parties to remedy the environmental damage caused.

GEJ is from this area, and has equally failed to assist with the struggles of the Niger Delta people. In the wake of his clear ineptitude I wondered if Buhari had an understanding of these issues at all.

Here is what is written in the APC manifesto:

APC Government will commit itself to the continuous well-being of the inhabitants of the Niger Delta area, and take measures to address the long overlooked challenges of environmental devastation and mass poverty among the people whose land lays the golden egg.

a) To mitigate the environmental degradation of the Niger – Delta areas, occasioned by oil exploration and gas flaring activities.

b) To douse the tension in the Niger-Delta areas because of youth restiveness.

c) To restore the confidence of the citizens from Niger-Delta areas in the oneness of the Nigerian nation.

i) Development and implementation of a special environmental clean-up program for the Niger-Delta

ii) Construct navigational bridges across big rivers and swampy lands to link isolated islands in the Niger-Delta areas with the rest of the country.

iii) Embark on mass-literacy programs for the citizens of the Niger-Delta areas.

iv) Gas flaring in the course of mineral oil mining activities shall be discontinued.

v) Enunciate a policy to compel Oil/Gas companies to embark on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes with definitive impact on the well-being of the Niger – Delta areas.

vi) Special focus on the funding and operational efficiency of the Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC) - See more at: http://apc.com.ng/index.php/about-apc/apc-manifesto#sthash.4jmdDvVk.dpuf

My question is - does this resolve the issues at all? Is there more to be desired? I notice there is no mention of resource control or indication of self governance.

What can be done to end the suffering of the Niger Delta people and how can we get this message to the future President?

It's not about passing the cries of the people to who ever is the president but implementing the policies layer down, providing basic needs, infrastructure and creating the enabling ground for business ideas and the people of Nigeria delta, indeed the people of Nigeria are good to go.

TEACHER:
Jonathan, 2+8?

JONATHAN:
March 28, Sir.

TEACHER:
This boy, I wonder how dull you are. Did I ask you of the month of March. Sit down!
(turns to a female pupil) You Patience, solve this problem.

PATIENCE:
Sir no bi me start d problem. Na Jega, dat boy weh de sit by d door. Make you sendam out, d problem go solve be dat.

TEACHER:
If I send him out, what will I do to dull pupils like Jonathan and you?

PATIENCE :
Make you allow us repeat class, Sir.

BUHARI:
(Raises hand and cuts in) Don't agree sir. They'll always fail. Dismiss them. The answer is 10.

TEACHER:
Very good! But give me 10 reasons why Jonathan should be dismissed, first. Remember he's still the class captain.

BUHARI:
1. He never speaks the truth.
2. He is wicked.
3. He never wears shoes to the school.
4. He cheats.
5.He sold all the bulbs in this classroom, that's why we can't read when it is dark.
6. He dances even when the class is in trouble.
7. He over sleeps.
8. He keeps rats in the same box we keep our monthly contributions.
9. He doesn't take correction and
10. Hates to be advised.

TEACHER:
Class, what Buhari listed are bad qualities of a leader. So I will give you the chance to choose another class captain before the end of March. Is that okay?

ALL:
Yes sir!!, it is okay sir

absolutely, the government fail to provide the needs of any Nigerian, but given the position of the communities within the oil producing areas they at least deserve the extra attention. The type paid to Abuja and Lagos for example.

Whoever takes on the role should have complete empathy for the individuals in the community and apart from the manifesto I haven't seen any evidence from the aspirants. We can rule Jonathan out especially given he is one of them - he's clearly more interested in politics than social mobilisation.

I totally agree with u on that considering the fact that the region has been neglected for far too long.
This is the major flaws of the current president. I expected that him been from the region should u/stand the suffering of the people in the region and also u/stand the suffering of the poor considering he is also from the low income earners then. I should believe he knows these problems of the low income earners and do something.
These does not mean am judging him cos I believe every person 1way or the other has something to offer his people, the difference is always the impact it has on the people.
For me though, it's goin to be APC.

I've completely judged him, he is a failure who has done nothing but benefit himself, allow insurgency and impunity to entirely corrupt a nation that is already incredibly corrupt.

Like they say charity begins at home and if he had the vision at all, it will be visible in otuoke. It is not.
