Advice On Film Making Investment (1.7 Millions Naira) by Safari29: 4:29pm On Mar 11, 2015
Good days my brother and sister,
i dont know if this is the right section or not but i need your candid advice anyway. am an aspiring film maker. film making is my dream and after working in a company for a couple of months i was able to save up to 1.7 millions. while working, during my leisure time i teach myself adobe premier cc and after effects with alot of videos and materials on net. i have been editing quite number videos i shot with my sam gal note3 and i can tell you they look very nice donno if i can upload here. i feel this is what i could do without getting bored, i daydream alot and i think am very creative. i have however been praying to God to give me the job i ll have fun doing and smiling to the bank everyday.

well am still working with the company but i want to quit inorder to face what i have passion for, but before i do that i need some advice from the film maker in the building (i dont even know any film maker). i already have a laptop (core i7, 8gb of ram) am thinking of getting a camera and its rigs, light, sound, tripod. i dont knwo how far my saving could go. someone told me film making is beyond dslr camera that i should go for blackmagic4k, but it is quite expensive thou $2,500. i just need your advice.
thanks in anticipation

Hi Safari29, I am also an aspiring filmmaker and understand perfectly what you're going through. First things first, filmmaking is very expensive. Very expensive. DON'T yet quit your job.

Secondly, film schools or institutes is not for everyone. Art (talent) cannot be taught or learned. Moreover film schools are very expensive and trust me they can only teach you the theoretical aspect of filmmaking which you can actually teach yourself of you are disciplined and ready to sweat it out.

My filmmaking aspirations began in 2012. But I quickly realized filmmaking is expensive and practical based. If you can't shoot good stuff with your Samsung S3 or iPhone then I should worry if you think you can shoot pro with a Blackmagic. And bro, there is a lot to filmmaking than just a camera. I know how the passion feels. The surge of excitement you get when something happens around you and you wish "Oh, this would be so good for a movie."

I have a ton of filmmaking books that deals with EVERY aspect of filmmaking, including the theories of filmmaking and audience paychology. You will be surprised at a lot of aspects the average Nigerian filmmaker skips, and THAT exactly is the reason why our films are mediocre. I also a couple of low end filmmaking equipments and a CPU that runs on core i7 with 16gb ram.

Let's hook on Whatsapp or BBM and we can talk better.

I should be given my leave bynextmonth ending and hopefully i ll use that time to get the necessary experience on set.

The urge is just too much as if its what God sent me to do. alot of dreams, ideas i feel am wasting, sometime i daydream about movie from begining to the end.
