Recent events in Nasarawa State have raised questions about whether the former information minister, Mr Labaran Maku, truly lost the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in the state given that there are rumors of a gang up against him within the party to scheme him out. A more challenging postulation is the fact that Maku still worked for his Principal President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP won overwhelmingly in Nasarawa State during the Presidential and NASS elections despite the fact that it is a state under APC control and one considered previously as a strong hold. MORE disturbing is the claim that Yusuf Agabi the PDP flag bearer in the state voted for APC candidate GMB instead of the PDP candidate President GEJ during the presidential elections.

Maku defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where he picked the governorship ticket. But he has remained an issue of discourse in PDP. He left, but it still appears he left behind a shadow so thick that the PDP is still struggling to free itself from.

Maku was among the seven aspirants, who lost to Yusuf Agabi, the PDP governorship candidate on December 8, 2014. He protested the outcome with a petition, alleging the exercise was fraught with multiple malpractices, including the intimidation of delegates. He said it was in the interest of the party “and the success of the 2015 general election” in the state that the allegations of manipulations be looked into and corrected.

But the PDP national leadership ignored him. This scenario compelled him to defect.

In APGA, Maku has swelled opposition against his old party as he has continued to receive the PDP members into his fold. He seems to have emerged as the main challenger to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate while the PDP candidate sink to obscurity.

Maku’s entry into the race has affected the chance of the APC and the PDP which are perpetual rivals. The two parties have lost members to Maku’s party, the APGA because of grievances arising from the outcome of the last primary elections in the APC and the PDP. To this ends, both parties are working together to stop Maku from coming in given that he is a Christian and the Sultan is said to be behind the scheme.

Posts on social network have shown some extreme Muslims openly indicating their disgust for a Christian governor in a state with both religions in Equal proportion. Reports from his campaign organization is pointing to possible plan to bribe returning officers in all level with the sum of N100,000 each.

the state radio official facebook page have quoted Almakura during an interactive session with the press saying “Whether the masses vote me or not, I will remain in office beyond May 29, 2015. My victory is non-negotiable.”

One of the biggest mistakes Jonathan made was his inability to manage the Maku crisis in PDP.

Truth be told, Maku is one brilliant young man who I foresee going places whether now or in the future.

For Maku to have remained in the reckoning despite all his travails indicate that he is a redoubtable character...
