Though many expect that things will change in a day or weeks, it’s not so; this is because it will take us years to amend changes.
Nigerians are in haste, people should not see the change that we are championing as a twinkle of an eye, we need prayers and patience for us to succeed For the second time in a week, President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday said that the change which Nigerians expect from his incoming administration would not be realised overnight.
Buhari hinged his assertion on the fact that governing Nigeria will be difficult for him because of the magnitude of the problems on ground.
He stated this in Yola, Adamawa State yesterday, during a Town Hall meeting and campaign for All Progressives Congress, APC candidates in Saturday’s Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
Only last Sunday, the President-elect had told the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, that Nigerians should not expect miracles from him.
In the interview, which Nigerian Pilot exclusively reported on Monday, Buhari said:
“For five, six years, the Nigerian law enforcement agencies, including the military, couldn’t secure 14 local governments in the North-East geopolitical zone.
“How can I promise miracles when I come? But with the cooperation of our neighbours: Cameroun, Chad, Niger and the international community, and the commitment we are going to get from the military, I think it will take us a much shorter time to deal with it.”
The BBC had in a report last week said that Buhari had promised to end Boko Haram insurgency within two months. But his party, APC refuted the report, claiming that the President-elect never gave a timeline to crush the terrorists.
But Buhari in Yola yesterday, declared that “governing Nigeria will be seriously difficult” because of what he termed “colossal rape of its economy and leadership deficit” by the outgoing ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
He said that for Nigeria to get out of the woods there should be commitment and perseverance in the leadership of the country, adding that’’ the new government will do its best to fix things in the right perspective.’’
Buhari, who thanked Nigerians for casting their votes for APC en-masse during the last Presidential and National Assembly polls, said the country is endowed with human and natural resources , “but unfortunately, the resources were mismanaged and squandered, leading to the present situation being experienced in the land.
“Though many expect that things will change in a day or weeks, it’s not so; this is because it will take us years to amend changes. Nigerians are in a haste; people should not see the change that we are championing as a twinkle of an eye, we need prayers and patience for us to succeed,’’ Buhari said.
He described corruption as a cancer that stymies progress in the country and vowed to fight the scourge head-on in order to salvage the country from the throes of economic bankruptcy.
“We need to fight corruption squarely for Nigeria to move forward. We will run a transparent government, in doing so, I will not favour my family,’’ Buhari stated.
The President-elect, who was accompanied by the
APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other party officials to the meeting, campaigned for the party’s candidates in Saturday’s elections.
He said: “I thank you for your votes and I appeal to you to vote for APC candidates in the remaining elections in the state. We believe in you and we know that your support will enable us serve you better and that is why we are appealing to you to vote for APC governorship candidate, Umaru Mohammed Bindow and all the House of Assembly members.”
At the meeting, some kingpins of PDP in the state, Dr. Silas Zwingina, Dr. Idi Aliyu Hong, Sadiq Haske (Walin Ganye), Umaru ‘Calculate’ Jada, decamped to APC.
Buhari had earlier visited the Lamido Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa.

I don't subscribe to him repeating this statement over and over again as it is a recipe for failure. No one is asking he changes Nigeria overnight nonetheless,no one wants to think he is incompetent unless he proves himself to be.

really? I don't know if integrity is interpreted differently in Nigeria. Sir,you made some promises during campaign, since you are a man of integrity we belive you won't say the impossible.

Just fulfil them & we will be okay. But with all this, you are already preparing your way for another four years, which is so possible because of the population of the north.

We just pray vote will count in 2019,JEGA is already going out, which may be replaced with another maurice iwu

this old fo0l is starting to annoy me already. the same defeatist attitude that GEJ displayed early into his regime is what this GMB has started doing. in order for change to be impactful, some foundational fundamental reforms need to be kick-started. if change can happen at the CENTER. at the roots then it will eventually pickup and nourish the tree of nationhood and fruits of democracy. but if GMB accommodates bugs, mites and worms in his administration, then the tree will not flourish and the fruits of democracy will become sour and rotten to taste the mouths of Nigerians.

GMB this your format of lowering your expectations and the hopes of Nigerians who voted you into power is a sacrifice we will pay in death and blood should you fail. GEJ failed and over 40,000+ deaths resulted due to boko-haram only, if we start to count the deaths from GEJ clueless administration we would hold him and senators and reps in jail for genocide.

GMB please this is Nigeria's last chance at greatness. other African nations who looked up to us in the past now taunt us as the Perpetual dullard of Africa.

Please stop making excuses. cut out the cancer that is killing Nigeria and we shall flourish once again.

Before election, change was the only word APC was singing, in fact the word was so used that one began to feel the change would be instant.

Wish Buhari had said he isn't a magician during his campaign. The fact is I am not bothered because after 4 years if we don't feel the change, we would send him to Duara.
Re: I Can't Change Nigeria Overnight – Buhari by Nobody: 10:33pm On Apr 10, 2015
The man is planning for failure

Reduce expectation in the hope Nigerians will not notice when you start failing

No sir this is digital age. The campaign promises are well documented and Nigerians will demand you redeem those promises

Bobo Chicago the oluwole master may be your mentor but Nigerians will not accept a dud cheque from you and your handlers!

I read the damn post. bottom line? he is preparimg the minds of Nigerians to expect the same level of development in lagos to apply to Nigeria. 16 years to reach where we are and we are no where near the qtr mark. we sympathize with his appreciation of the ernomity of the task ahead. this is why he must. (MUST) prepare for success by putting his very soul in the quest to make Nigeria better. from the top to the bottom GMB must instill the discipline he created that has lasted well over 20 years. the only reason why Nigerian have developed a queue culture. Nigerians understand what he is saying and it is not new. we tire of it since the days of IBB

Fellow nairalander please what do you think that will be the reaction of our corrupt politicians if Buhari tell nig at inauguration ceremony that he is committed to strenghten the EFCC and ICPC and begin to renovate nig prisons?
Re: I Can't Change Nigeria Overnight – Buhari by fitzmayowa: 11:02pm On Apr 10, 2015
GMB should quit telling us this magician story and hit the ground running after he is sworn in...

No one expects him to turn nigeria around over night, but telling us this magician story repeatedly is an indication that him(GMB) is stylishly telling us he is likely to perform below expectation...
Re: I Can't Change Nigeria Overnight – Buhari by kasiem(m): 11:08pm On Apr 10, 2015
Even if buhari fails expected western media to make him look great and the northern manipulations to consolidate his stay there. Seriously, how would one expect any reasonable change from one who did make any reasonable promise to us?
