Well I have often tried to explain the difference between FAITH in a God and superstitious beliefs in Magic and Juju which do not exist (demonstrably so). But some people here cannot understand the distinction and so keep using that failed argument to justify their superstition.

I have seen a fair bit of not just Nigeria but the world. I have seen MANY claims of magic/powers/juju/curses etc and ALL are RUBBISH.

I don't want to be abusive or offensive but civilized educated people in general do not believe such rubbish. Yes a few Europeans claim to be witches etc but they are correctly regards by the VAST majority as the lunatic fringe.

If someone says they believe in this rubbish how could I ever trust them with a position of responsibility?

Remember it is easy to fool people and especially easy to fool those who are culturally inclined to believe this rubbish. You have a choice - stay in the past with magic and juju or move forward to the modern day like the rest of the world.

I was talking about ANY kind of FAITH in a deity (any deity). Therefore it cannot be proven nor indeed disproven.

Unlike a silly belief in magic/juju which IS testable and fails thus proving it does not exist!

Hope this is not too complicated for you! cheesy

Hey,mr kolo oyinbo...
In as much as i am igbo,i cant make ignorant and insultive comments about d yorubas peoples beliefs.

being a NON african ,You have no RIGHT to tell the yoruba pple what they should believe or not and even spew out stuupid comments on issues u knw nothing about.
Tradition is tratdition and it is exemplary that these pple uphold the cultures and beliefs of their ancestors.
Its not ur business.
Dont think that because u've been in nigeria for a few years you know us so well and dnt wish in ur dreams to ever experience what juju/voodoo really is cos u'll regret it and if ur lucky enough to survive it,you'll run back to europe and never come back.

Not telling anyone about their religion mere commenting that Juju/Magic and rubbish like that does NOT EXIST. ALL educated people know that the world over. If Nigeria is to progress then she must rid herself of these ignorant superstitions.

Tradition is OK and ceremonies for entertainment and tourists but to believe in Magic? cheesy

if people can believe that a man was born of a virgin, died and resurrected after some days,he walked on water, ascended to the sky and its termed logical or 'civilised' ,why should the beliefs of others be termed 'superstitious'??arent they all 'myths/magic' with no scientific proof??

No proof. No dis-proof hence we call it FAITH.

No proof LOT OF DIS-PROOF!

All religions work on the principle of faith.
majority of the chinese are atheist or buddist yet their nation is still amongst the most developed in the world.
christainity is the problem of africa cos it has blinded most africans to believing a mythical being(jesus)would come down and help them solve their problems, hence they pray consistently but dont act.
the ancient egyptians believed and worship their gods i.e ausar, maat etc they were NEVER christians yet they gave the world civilization and built great empires.
christianity helped destroy africa, majority of africans are christains yet we're still in dis same miserable conditions.africa was greater in precolonial times

If you think clearly enough you will discern the difference between FAITH as applied to ANY religion (even African Traditional as a religion) and MAGIC/JUJU which can be tested and fails miserably.

On the quite separate idea of Christianity holding back Africa (clearly nonsense) it was partly colonialism irrespective of whatever religion accompanied it. The idea of Magic/Juju holds Africa back. Anyone believing such rubbish cannot be taken seriously by any educated person. Do you go to a medical doctor or witch doctor if your child is ill? Can juju eradicate Polio? etc etc.

Africa is actually progressing except in the minds of the lowest strata who are being left behind partly due to lack of opportunity. They take their resentment for this out on the 'west' associated in their minds with civilized values and culture and turn instead to a failed and worthless belief in juju/magic. They can even convince themselves it exists! Hence threads like a bird falling down and turning to a woman etc etc grin

The difference between FAITH and SUPERSTITION is really very clear (think about what cannot be proven either way as opposed to that which is testable, has been tested and failed miserably) but for some reason the armchair philosophers here seen to find the simple premise beyond them. (Don't know why?)
