Every 1st of May, the Nigerian Labour Congress celebrates Workers Day. A situation where workers do not go to work. Many times, NLC has been vocal on issues pertaining workers welfare and salaries but they have kept mute on SALARIES of NYSC corp members. Are corp members not workers too? I know NYSC is fully responsible for the welfare of the corp members and the essence of the work is service to the Nation. However, we should differentiate between Idealism and Realism. It is ideal to think corp members are there for free service to the nation. But it is reality to accept that they also need money for upkeep, accommodation and transportation. Being a corp member does not spare one from the market prices of goods or high cost of living. So, corp members should be adequately paid or compensated with regards to present economic realities. So the question is how has NLC contributed to NYSC and the welfare of corp members??
