The first booby-trap waiting for Buhari is ignoring the political restructuring of Nigeria, restructuring which was started by Obssanjo, ignored by late Yar'Adua for reasons that the existing political structure favours the north, but restructuring continued by Jonathan's CONFAB - though belated. The political restructuring of the CONFAB yet to be implemented. When implemented, CONFAB political restructuring shall go a long way to close the yawning gap in political representation between the north and south of Nigeria.

If Buhari is not keen on restructuring Nigeria's political structure created by northern soldiers which leaves the far north an overwhelming political representation compared to little representation for the entire south of Nigeria, the time has come to return regional government system with fiscal federalism to Nigeria - as was before the present unitary government system was introduced followed by states getting created.

Having a whooping 19 states+Abuja in the once one region north of Nigeria, but only 17 states in the once three regions south of Nigeria is the greatest fraud that now leaves the north the capacity to determine whatever is going to take place in Nigeria.
Land mass or population is never used as criterion in any federal country to create new federating units as was used to create Nigeria's states.
What should have been at the end of states creation in Nigeria is having equal multiples of states from the existing federating units that existed when states started to be created.
Imagine soldiers rising in say, the US and divided the states of California and Texas into many more states to get more revenues to California or Texas areas, as well as sending more legislators from California or Texas to the US Congress!! That's exactly what northern soldiers did in Nigeria when they created Nigeria's states.

At the beginning in 1914, British northern and southern protectorates in West Africa were merged to get today's Nigeria. But today, states creation by northern soldiers have turned southern Nigeria to a mere appendage, or even a colony of the northern protectorate.

What 3 regions are you talking about

The North has more than one region...

In case you don't know they also have more than one tribe... But hausa is dominant..

There was northern protectorate and southern protectorate at the beginning.

Before states started to be created, there was only one northern region; there were three southern regions, before Ironsi's unitary government system, the regions did not wholly depend on Lagos the seat of power for sustenance. Unitary government system was later gradually made too over-centralized and became as monstrous and unworkable as it is now.

States were not created for tribes.

That's because they divided Nigeria according to how they wanted to share the religion...

I understand all of these to mean advice but folks like Agbakogba need to realise that the act of governance is a continuous process and not all of a country's problems could be solved at the first time of asking.

This is the very same reason a lot of people never really appreciated President Goodluck Jonathan because they believed he had an answer to all of Nigeria's myraids of problems..

Buhari as a departure from this trend, needs articulate all of the things that for now are absolutely essential for the continued peaceful existence of this political system, then lay a good foundation for it's takeoff and let whoever that succeeds him continue from where he stops.

But the way he is doing it now like coming out with patronising statements that he'll stabilize oil price, end corruption, pay unemployed graduates and provide free meal to school kids without first carrying out a feasibility study, will only result in another four years of wild goose chase.

Obasanjo tried to adopt a bullish approach to solving Nigeria's power problems, for instance, but ended up spending trillions on that sector without returns. In the end, Nigeria's money that could have been put to good use were washed down the drain while the problems remained.

GEJ, as a pace setter in that sector, has laid a solid foundation for private participation and Buhari can further this endeavour by removing all encumberances and obstructiaons that may be strewn on its path to ensure that only fit and proper persons are allowed a stake in that sector

But if he thinks he can go about governance like a bull in Chinese shop, he just might end up spending the next four years trying to clip the wings of both his real and imaginary foes while Nigerians continue to bear the brunt.

Okey-Odumakin wants him to bring out the Chibok girls after romancing with Jonathan for one year without asking him for the girls. NLC's Wabba and his likes could not get the minimum wage increase pass N18,000, now they are asking Buhari for N90,000. Agbakoba just woke up to capital flight from Nigeria. When Jonathan put about $10M on Ayo Oritsejafor's plane to South Africa, what did he say?

While he's at it, he should also ignore the oil resources from those enemies of progress and focus on cocoa. Palm oil, tomatos and potatoes

Even a road side vulcanizer who is very sincere can perform better than those that led nigeria so far.

If buhari is sincere he would achieve a lot, this is a country that has no institution working and no infrastructure.

we are a mass of people with various cleavages and fault lines – religious, ethnic, linguistic – roaming in the vast territorial space called Nigeria

This is the root of our problems. There is no patriotism, no pride.

Nigeria can be likened to a house on fire; instead of these politicians quenching the fire, they try to take as much as they can out of the house before it finally burns to the ground cry.

Will it ever get better?

Exactly!!!! One sweating beer for you man....oops its Sunday morning. Holy communion will do.

If any president in a democratic setting Decides to screw up his lawmakers , Den he should be rest assured that he will fail badly.

Leaders don't change nations, people do. Those lawmakers are directly elected by the people and will do whatever the people wish. If the system doesn't work, it means the peoole donot have the capacity to organise themselves to accomplish things. Such immaturity is the reserve of slaves and the penalty is suffering.

The national assembly in Nigeria is made up of 469 people who will receive about 25 million naira monthly to run their designation offices...

Now what makes u think cutting of the 150 billion naira designated to dem will develop Nigeria??

Nigerians should wake up, corruption is not the reason why we are having all these problems...Fighting corruption does not build roads, it does not give electricity, it does not build bridges , It does not build hospitals n it does not provide quality education ...

Was wondering myself....
I didn't hear what these people say when Jona government paid 1.2tn. to his thieffing friends in the name of subsidy, maybe i was offline then.
Everyone now sets an agenda for GMB who did not even have an idea what is left in the treasury.
Why didn't they talk about billions of dollars paid Tompolo & co to enable him protect the illegal bunkerers rather than protecting the pipeline?
Whether we like it or not, at a particular time in our life not necessarily in the know to anyone of us in the public, the truth will catch up with hypocrytes who individually got involved.
They want all those things achieved under him yet they said he is an illiterate?

Re: The Booby Traps Before Buhari – Olisa Agbakoba. by 989900: 11:27am On May 03, 2015
It is very simple; Buhari has to start with 'flogging' himself and everyone around him, once he starts with himself, everyone else would fall in line.
When you see your Governor, or local Government chairman queuing, does anyone ever think about jumping the queue?

When your Governor is stranded in traffic, and not blaring siren to have his way, does anyone ever dare?

When we were kids, all my mama needed to do to warn my friends to stop making noise was make an example out of me, by the time my friends see what she has done to her own son, everyone 'dissolves' 'in the blink of an eye'.

You can't tell people to fast while you are feasting.
