You missed a point. I thought it is medically advisable to lubricate that island regularly for the benefit of both mother and child during delivery.

A lot of guys don't really know how to be real with their wives.
This creates all sorts of silly expectations from the wife's end.
They start thinking he is God and hold him to the standard of God. i.e. Work and provide for me but also be right there at my side or be talking to me 24/7. (omni-presence)

A lot of females lack the understanding that both activities are mutually exclusive.
Adequate conditioning is required to change this selfish feminine thinking right from the dating stage.

That exactly is the point of the writer. It shows sacrifice. Your wife also has a job but she takes time out because of your child. No reasonable boss will tell you to miss your doctor's appointment. It goes a long way in showing your wife that you truly care and that you are both in this together.
