A study conducted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reveals that Nigeria has the highest percentage of female business owners in the world. 41% of women in Nigeria are business owners. I'm so proud. Unfortunately, the notion of entrepreneurship is not equal among nations. A woman who owns a roadside kiosk selling food items in Africa and a woman who owns a fashion line in North America are both business owners - but are they comparable?. A lot of women in Nigeria are forced into owing businesses due to unfortunate circumstances. For example, I'll consider my mother an entrepreneur, she opened a small shop because despite years of loyally serving her country as a civil servant, her retirement package remained unpaid for many years. I have a friend who studied biochem, couldn't land a job after graduation, became a tailor apprentice, and is in the process of opening her own seamstress shop. While there are many thriving female business owners in Nigeria, I doubt more than 20% of female entrepreneurs in the country belong to that group. I will say though, if there is a trait I admire about my fellow-countrywomen, it is their unshakeable determination to always pull through even in the direst of circumstances, and this study is an affirmation of that fact.
