It is caused by scarcity of fuel

Subsidy money not properly remitted into the account of major marketers

The oil marketers are hoarding the product in protest of money they claim Federal Government is owing them.

Recall that about 2 weeks ago President Jonathan wanted to bring the scarcity to an end..... He paid N130billion to the marketers..... they collected the money promising to end the scarcity only to turn around and started to demand an additional N70billion.
It's beat me how a group of greedy bastards will hold d country to ransom......... If only Nigerians allowed fuel subsidy to go we would not be where we are today.

I will say the answer is GEJ because he made the Federal Govt a parastatal under the Ministry of Finance and appointed the Minister for Finance as the commander in chief of the economy.
Mrs Okonjo Iweala i hail thee!!!,Iya mi oshoronga...

Nigeria import fuel at a landing cost of #156 naira through marketers/importers and sell to the public @ #97 naira. The difference is paid/subsidised by the government.Nigeria consume over 40 million litres of fuel daily. These importers took loans to bring these fuel to nigeria with huge interest,if they are paid in bits as is being done by okonjo iweala, how will they survive. They ve stop bringing fuel, hence the persistent scarcity.NNPC alone cannot meet up with the demand, since nothing is working there, its a den of incompetent and corrupt Nigerians.

another reason apart from the ones mentioned by other commentators , my opinion is because the matketers are being careful of the incoming new govt that might remove subsidy completely and probably reduce the oil price after revealing the scam behind it, therefore rendering the marketers stranded and in huge loss which they are scared of happening and remember greed wouldn't let them wish well for other people but themselves .

If subsidy is removed, price of fuel will increase. They should fix our refinery and kick out these marketers, its not easy, because its their cronies and their sons that are involved.GMB haa an uphill task ahead of him.

Bru I undastand ur point. As it is now with crude @ $60 per barrel, landing cost shouldnt b more than a #100 per litre. We can still deal with that price, afterall we hav been shellin out far more in d past weeks, no thanks to d clueless one. Other thing is we can relax a bit now knowin whatever accruables from d subsidy funds will b judiciously managed & ploughed back appropriately into d economy with PMB in charge...while effort is on to get d refineries working. D truth is thers actually no subsidy, just these thieves round-tripping on us & on top, viciously raping our backsides while taking us hostage, this has to stop!

My opinion: Political uncertainty.

This has led to economic tension. Many other commodities that are imported are also scarce as we speak. But the over-reliance on imported fuel means that the effects are instantly noticeable.

Apart from the subsidy payment crises, many marketers have stopped importing altogether until the new administration unveils its plan for our energy market.

The tension in the Niger Delta has not helped matters as there are concerns that attacks on the oil installations will resume if the new government is not favorable to the terms of the Amnesty program.

Scarcity will eventually lead to inflation.

Pray we don't get there because by then it will be too late.
