First of all my father was well informed, social media is just one of numerous means of information, their is tv,radio, newspaper etc.

The radio and the TV he listened to in those days,did he have the chance to air out his opinion back to the radio or TV when social or political issues are being discussed? There was no handset back then remember.

He aired his view on telephone. How? In nigeria here? I meant he missed the kind if info that comes with social media,first hand info from various perspectives and context,you cant compare that to the media we have back in the days that can be likened to an orchestrated govt-to-media kinda press.
