My take is dat Gej as a weak leader couldn't manage d subsidy issue. U will ask me why? 1. D FG didn't put machinery on ground to really knw wht quantity really came in as to ascertain d real quantity of fuel brought in remember dat there was a time he was shouting of cabal. 2. he shld hav fix d refinery b4 nw cos experts said it takes only 12months 2 fix d refinery. 2012 till date is 3yrs. I still blv we r on d right page cos even if dey didn't pay billions on subsidy or nt d money wouldn't hav impacted on Nigerian masses

I for one have never believed the reality of fuel subsidy so I am not surprised at this confessin.
But my people what were you thinking when Dr. Chritopher Kolade resigned as SURE P chairman ? Politics ? Noooooo
I dont know of late , but up till 2005, the cost build up for all the imported fuel never reflected any subsidy from the Federal Government and the importers have been claiming it prior my record time.

What is the basis for that? Is population the only variable for consideration? How is it a disadvantage for 177 million and not for 2 million . It is like saying eggs are good for a family of 2 children but not 177 children. That does not sound analytical at all. Eggs are goo for all children and depending on their peculiar circumstances the family of 177 may be better able to afford eggs. Opinions as they enter our heads need to be screened with a filter of analysis and logic. All governments subsidize one thing or another whether they choose to subsidize fuel, education, healthcare or agriculture or defence industries etc is a local choice. No two countries have the same priorities

If there are 2 per family children in Nigeria, the government will find it easy to buy them Eggs daily ......But if each family has 177 children, it will be very hard for the government to buy eggs for all of them.

In fact it will cost billions to buy dem d eggs daily.

Like I said there are other variables so your analysis is feeble. If government is not subsidizing petrol it is subsidizing health or agriculture or education. Ceteris paribus countries with larger populations have larger economies

If each family has 177 children government would do better to buy them a poultry instead and the children can work there cool so we need to analyse properly

Remove subsidy or pass the bulk of Govt inefficiency on the people?
It will be very s!!ly for any government to wake up one morning to remove subsidy.

Built2last:
I am not surprised at all, it has been at the heart of GEJ to remove subsidy...1/4 of our annual budget goes into subsidy the suffering is much but this may make GMB consider removing it more seriously.

We are in for a long thing. I know GMB will not pay any bloody marketer a dime.
He will first scrutinise all documents before him, then, take best decision.

The common man will suffer this more.

Civil servants
Okada riders
Keke riders
Women who grind things in the market.

Let it be known to over 2millions nairalanders that I @Built2last support the removal of the Subsidy..GMB, please remove subsidy..fuel is so scarce that no body remembers that official price is 87 naira...abeg remove it..even my 3 year old son now knows the word subsidy...

Lastpage: You are equating unending "Price Increase",..... with "Subsidy removal"! grin grin

The two are different and l will do the explaining... once.

In the name of "subsidy removal", OBJ's government INCREASED the price of fuel Nine times (9) in his eight years of governance.
Each time there was an increase, the same "reason/excuse" that was given is SUBSIDY REMOVAL! (just as you are still singing in 2015!)

Now ask yourself, how much is the real cost of a litre of Petrol (production, refinement, transportation costs, e.t.c), that such increases NEVER get rid of this evil called "subsidy"?

For example, if the total cost of production was #50, to get the fuel to the Petrol Station, and you are selling it to Nigerians at #87, you are making profit and to talk of "subsidy" at that point is CRIMINAL.
Remember Jonathan himself said something about "CABALS" who make money of this fuel Subsidy problems?

The bottom line is that we are paying way too much above the cost of production, for the Petrol ALREADY hence when people say there is no subsidy, this is what they are referring to. Buhari knows this as well

Now, successive Govts, including Good Badluck Jonathan, have invested in "Private Refineries" outside Nigeria and these "Cabals" steal our Crude Oil, take it to their "private Refinery" to refine and bring it back to Nigeria.... and want a higher price for it!
That is "SUBSIDY"! That is why they ensured that our own Refineries will NEVER workundecided undecided
Same goes for "Generator Importers" and the PHCN (Nepa) problem we have. wink

A second group of these CABALS, simply steal our already REFINED products (or underpay NNPC for it), load it on ships and sail on the Atlantic ocean for a few minutes, DO A U-TURN and call such fuel "imported fuel".... thereby "qualified" for "SUBSIDY"!
shocked shocked shocked

These my friends are the issues Nigerian face!
SUBSIDY IS A SCAM by the CABALS. There is "nothing" to remove! Infact, Nigerians are owed a refund.... or are we the only country producing oil, why is venezuela not selling at such exorbitant rate to its citizens?

But then, who will see "awoof" money and would not claim it?
It is the duty of the Government, the President being its commander, to STOP these FRAUD.

I hope Buhari will be "ready and able" to JAIL these Criminals (being that this is a civilian Govt that does not rule by decrees!).

Anyone is free to deliberately or ignorantly wallow is self-deceit (mostly for "tribal and illiteracy" reasons) but no one can pretend not to know the TRUTH NOW.

PassingShot:

To start with, GEJ failed woefully in the way and manner he tried to remove the subsidy (if there really was).

You don't wake up one morning to announce such removal and increase in pump price without sensitizing the nation; without discussing with major stakeholders.

And the partial removal that he did, what did we get in returns?

The SURE-P program, as has been revealed just last week that the employee figure was inflated from 12k to 35k, is another evidence of the scam.

The buses that were promised, where are they today? The refineries, where are they?

Bottom line:
1. I believe there was no true subsidy in the first instance. What we had was an imaginary subsidy.

2. If there truly was subsidy, GEJ could have handled the removal in a more responsible manner than just announcing through the radio, on January 1st 2012, that subsidy was removed. No where in the whole world will such action go unchallenged. He needed to have discussed it with major stakeholders the need to remove subsidy. IBB, Abacha and even OBJ removed some subsidy and we witnessed how they handled it.

3. Nigerians, by rejecting the subsidy, were able to reduce/limit their loss had we allowed full subsidy removal.

4. Now that majority of Nigerians believe we have a more trust-worthy president in Buhari, they will accept a subsidy removal (if there was any) provided they know what they'd get in returns in predetermined dates.

most of the things you were told in 2012 were white lies, ironically, some dolts are still recycling those lies till date, nobody ponders why the stories don't add up.
When the fuel subsidy removal was announced, I didn't take it seriously because I knew there was no money to pay the subsidy in the first place, most people couldnt figure it out.

Where did Yaradua pay subsidy from in his last days? ECA, after 2011 elections, Jonathan ate into it so deeply, that aggravated the governors who went to court to get their share.

Recently , Iweala published who got what from the ECA, which is a proof that there was no money to pay subsidy in the first place. where did the Sure-p funds come from? simple, from the federation account.
Next revelation to Nigerians will be that there was no feed stock for the refineries in the first place, reason the refineries are left to rot, but hey!! any one can believe whatever they want to believe.

Jonathan told them that the solution to subsidy removal was setting up refineries, meanwhile, the products from the refineries at the time were subsidized grin grin grin, some bingos actually believed that nonsense!!

Nigerians are exponentially dumb and the politicians know that too well.

My question is, where does the money for subsidy come from? Federation account I suppose.
If I am to pay 1m for subsidy but because of the the partial removal, I pay 600k, then pay sure P 400k. Does it mean sure P never existed?

I want to understand how paying from federation account proves the none existence of sure P.

You are one of those Nigerians Jonathan will read their post and call them, dumb!!, people like you are the reason our politicians act pretty crazy, because you have no idea what is going on and you feel you can analyse what you don't know, let me give you a shocker!! are you aware that the Cabal is praying everyday for subsidy to be removed?? are you aware that Subsidy is a very big problem for the cabal? simply because Jonathan lied that Cabal sponsored the Ojota rally you believed him?
If you know anything about the downstream sector, you will never take Jonathan seriously.
Did Jonathan not promise you that refineries will solve the subsidy problem, did you believe him? well! the shocker is that in 2012, products from the refineries were equally subsidized so what difference will a new refinery make? grin grin grin grin
Jonathan and his gang made most of you look stup!!d.

Demand n supply decides price. In Nigeria, No one wants that. the citizen wants fixed price on a volatile commodity....That's very sad.

The only thing left to tell u is that crude oil is an expensive commodity, Only a few nations get gasoline less than 87 naira per litre. The average price of gasoline in the whole world is 230 naira per litre.

Russia is the number 1 producer of crude oil in the world n yet the citizens buy 140 naira per litre.

Nations with a population of over 100 million people(Like Russia, India, China, United states, Indonesia, Brazil n Pakistan) basically buy gasoline between 150 and 350 naira per litre. Subsidy becomes detrimental @ that populace.

Its best fuel subsidy money is put into other better uses.
