Man jailed for insulting Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State

An area court in Jalingo on Wednesday, sentenced one Shuaibu Bakari (25) to six months imprisonment without an option of fine, for insulting Gov. Danbaba Suntai of Taraba.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Iorbee Elijah told the court that Bakari committed the offence on Dec. 12, 2008, contrary to section 113 of the penal code.

Elija said that the accused called the governor a ``liar’’ during the inauguration of the Jalingo Local Government Council Secretariat.

He told the court that the accused shouted ``Karya ne,’’ while Suntai was addressing the gathering, meaning that the governor was telling lies.

He explained that the action of the accused was capable of causing a disturbance by inciting the public against the governor.

The prosecution called three witnesses who testified before the court.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency, saying that he was a first offender.

Bakari apologised to the court and promised never to commit such an offence again.

The Judge, Musa Iliya, advised the accused to be of good behaviour after serving his jail term.

He warned him that the court would not be lenient with him if he appeared before it again.
