Buhari’s Inaugural Speech: As Seen By The World.. by bashydemy(m): 11:46am On Jun 07, 2015
The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, described President Muhammadu Buhari’s inaugural speech as laying out “a powerful agenda.” Kerry, who gave assurance that the United States would support the new administration to tackle insurgency and the economic challenges bedevilling the country, was accosted by journalists within the venue of the inauguration immediately after the event.

Kerry--n-ShoukryHe said, “The inauguration is historic and very promising. The President made a very important speech, laid out a very powerful agenda and the United States is prepared to work very closely to help to do and everything we can on the economy, Boko Haram and other issues. The President did a very great job today.”

UK’s Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond explained that the UK was now committed to helping Nigeria tackle challenges, in a manner that was difficult before now. He listed such challenges to include security, diversifying the economy from a reliance on oil, tackling corruption, ensuring that the security agencies respect human rights, and others.

Although the security situation in the North East is much better than it was before due to the cooperation with Nigeria’s neighbours, Hammond noted that it was necessary to crush the terrorist sect. “Clearly there is a great atmosphere of expectations and there are great expectations for the future…we have always said Nigeria should be the powerhouse of Africa,” he said adding that the UK looks forward to working with Buhari as it did with his predecessors.

The Foreign Secretary noted that there are high expectations that the new President would particularly tackle corruption headlong as it remains a scourge that sucks wealth out of the country President Jacob Zuma of South Africa praised Nigeria’s democratic transition to a new government with the swearing-in of Buhari.

“The fact that this has happened in Nigeria in the manner in which it has – particularly if we take Nigeria as one of the leading countries on this continent which must lead by example – this is a very perfect example. It is encouraging to us. We are very happy,” Zuma said in an interview with a national TV.

The Egyptian government urged Buhari to ensure that all issues raised in his inaugural speech are successfully implemented. Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sameh Shoukry, who spoke in Abuja, said both countries must improve on their economic relations.

Shoukry, who was in the country to represent the Egyptian president during Buhari’s inauguration, said, “We look forward to the newly elected government successfully implementing all the issues the President raised in his inaugural address. I am sure the evaluation will always be that of the Nigerian people.” He described the inauguration ceremony as historic, stating that the Egyptian government looks forward to increasing ties with Nigeria.

Dark days over-Liberian President SirleafHammond-n-Zuma

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia congratulated Buhari, noting that Africa has travelled from its dark days of wars and coup d’états as a means of political transitions.

“Today’s inaugural ceremony testifies to the deepening of democracy across the African Continent and confirms how far our Continent has travelled from its dark days of wars and coup d’états as a means of political transitions”, Sirleaf said. The Liberian Leader then praised the roles of the former President, the contesting parties and the people of Nigeria for this inspiring example.

Allegiance pledge okay – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan applauded Buhari for pledging allegiance to all in his inaugural speech. Reacting to the speech, in Yenagoa, Jonathan said he was gladdened by the posture of the president. “Buhari said that he does not belong to any clique, and I congratulate him for that statement. “It shows that we should all rally around him to work towards the development of the country and make Nigerians happy,” Jonathan said.

Speech reflects APC manifesto – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar described the inauguration as historic, saying the President’s inaugural speech was a reflection of the APC manifesto. He said, “It is a very historic day for our democratic process and for Africa. His promises are based on the party’s manifesto and I believe we will all work towards achieving the objectives.”

A member of the House of Representatives, Opeyemi Bamidele said the speech reflected seriousness, focus and “demonstrated the resolve of a man who is determined to really make a difference.”

He added, “And going by the antecedent of the Vice-President, I have no doubt that the administration will hit the ground running. I also have no doubt that this should mark the true beginning in the kind of the transformation that we need in the area of building our economy, strengthening our democracy and ensuring good governance in this country.”

The presidential candidate of KOWA Party in the March 28 presidential election, Professor Oluremi Sonaiya, said Buhari’s speech “touched on the vital aspects of our realities.’’ “It was a great speech, touching upon the vital aspects of our realities and the challenges ahead of us. “It is good to hear him say “I belong to everybody” and I think we are in for a new kind of public conduct by our leaders,” Sonaiya said.

The Bayelsa State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUCN), Mr Tari Dounana, said that the speech indicated that Buhari was ready to bring change to the country. Dounana urged the new president to fulfill his promises to Nigerians irrespective of party, religious and tribal affiliation. “The president said that he belonged to everyone and to nobody. That is the kind of words we want from a leader.

“Thank God Nigeria’s democracy is advancing and we have gotten a leader that will take the issues of workers very seriously,” he said. Meanwhile, the National Secretary of Labour Party, Mr. Olukayode Ajulo, described the inaugural speech as vague and not far- reaching enough based on the expectations of Nigerians.

“Agreed, the President’s speech could not have covered every conceivable issue; however, the commander-in-chief cannot brush these issues aside because all key stakeholders want to hear from him, it is from him that they take their cue respectively,”he stated.

“Having read and listened to the inaugural speech of General Mohammadu Buhari even with high expectations, one can deduce that Mr President conspicuously refused to dwell on burning issues like unpaid salaries of Nigerian workers who are groaning in pains with no respite on sight.”

Of what use is a polished speech to the numerous needs of the country? If governance is all about speech making, there are better orators in town. He should get to work at once and stop all this noise making.

Buhari inaugural speech was so empty as he did not present any innovative ideas on economic and security resolution. It was his usual rhetoric 'I'll stabilize oil price,' 'I make $1=#1.
