Fish Farming And Pig Farming: Which Is More Profitable? by Inyeneobon: 9:47am On Sep 17, 2006
Can someone help me decide between fish farming and piggery?

Which one is best to start up in terms of profits?

Please I would like figures and estimates from people who are currently doing it now.

Muslims don't eat pigs, but I think they eat fish. And even among Christians, there are more fish lovers than pig lovers. So normally I would recommend fish farming unless pig farmers happen to be relatively scarce.

@ topic
i think pig farming is not so profitable as being protrayed by most people. i am telling u dis frm experience my dad once had a pig farm.
Pig farming could be fraustrating. their sizes is determined by the amount and quality of feed they are given.if they r fed wit low quality food they dont grow and their prices is det by their weight. Selling them could be problem depending on the period and the number of pigs. you might have 2 wait for months before u get buyers in bulk and the buyers det the price. Guess what they eat like hell. if u dont av the financial muscles, GUY no try am.

From experience piggery is just a good mean of savings.

Uhmmm,

It should depend on a feasibility study that you should have conducted cool

Chances are that, in my opinion (if it counts for anything more than "my2cents" grin), given the naijan landscape, fish farming would be more profitable. Note that I have said "Nigerian landscape". In other words, if your focus is on the Nigerian landscape, make it fish-farming. If you are looking at the international market, it *could* be pigs, who knows?

I hope this helps

In my pre-teens, I had alot of pets
I had a pot-belly pig who had a temper like human being
it gets angry when u don't feed it on time and chase me all over the house
it eats my chocy-cheese and then gets sick. then the vet had to be called in.
Our neighour says it is expensive to run pig farm because they're like children with alot of appetite and Health issues

And I don't know much about fish except if you're talking about JAWS
anyway i'm a vegetarian

I would definitely choose fish

There are foreign fishermen that come to Africa and fish the waters. They take the catch back to their country and sell it for huge profits.

Also Muslims eat only halal meat, no pork so that immediately reduces the size of the market you can sell to. Everyone eats fish all day every day.

Im suprised that all you Nigerians dont know that there are many pig eaters in Nigeria.
Not only this, but Pig is by far more expensive then Fish, Goat or Cattle.

Next time you go to your local market enquire on the price of a pound of Pig, and see the amounts you get.
I was suprised to learn the expensive nature of pig meat when i travelled home.

Like my2cents said it depends on the feasibility. Iam from Jos area and when i went back home it was rare for me to sit down and eat only stock fish.
This might be different in other parts of the country where rivers and lakes and ocean strams are more abundant.

But nevertheless it really depends on how the business would be handled. Which markets would be targetted, who would be targetted (obviously not muslims with pork).
I also believe that fish farming would be less hassle due to the perpetual growth of fishes. There cycle of lfe is much shorter and they reproduce at much higher rate.

Ah what the heck, go wid fish farming ! tongue

Muslims consider pigs unclean, while the scientific community considers pork unhealthy. That's a big problem.
Re: Fish Farming And Pig Farming: Which Is More Profitable? by Obirin0521: 12:19am On Oct 15, 2007
Seun: Not quite. Pork is now considered 'The Other White Meat' after chicken. The new food tech innovations have made their meat leaner and thus more favorably viewed by nutritionists than standard red meat.

Try the pig farming, though it is stressful am sure you will smile when you start selling, produce in bulk then you are up in cash, it has a waiting market you don't have to source for buyers, they will come asking your price.

Hi guys,

Firstly, I will not go into the process of comparing both forms of farming; because each form of farming is unique, and ofcource with its ups & downs depending on the market in question. In the European market  both forms of farming are practised .

I am Nigerian Swine Consultant, and I will will comment on the act of Swine Breeding where I am specialized; I must inform you guys that it is in fact a very profitable business. The "white meat" as its always refered to is on of the cheapest and of course very healthy. Interested parties can visit http://animalfarmer.org  so that you can have an idea.

Nigeria, could a very important player along South Africa in Swine production. Putting the religious issues around pigs behind us would help much, and the "cleanness"  issue I believe that if you log on the aforementioned site you will have a better idea of real swine production is all about.
A country like Nigeria, with scarcity of meat protein can be very lucrative for the business. For more information visit my site and leave a message.

http://animalfarmer.org, already farmers who might want any form of consultation ( GENETICS - NUTRITION - FARM MANAGEMENT )are also wellcome
For example, a fully mechanised Farrow - finish Pig Farm Unit with about 1000 sows under favourable circumstance could produce a Gross profit of about 1.2 Million Euros per annum.

Argentinian Pig Sector' could be examplary for Nigeria:

Opportunities for pig sector in Argentina

Argentina can export meat and eggs for a low cost price, offering the country chances to become a worldwide supplier of poultrymeat, pork and eggs.  The country, however, has to invest strongly in animal welfare. Especially layers and breeding sows animal living conditions are considered to be severely lower than is conventional in the European Union.

These conclusions could be read in the latest report of the Dutch Agricultural Economic Institute (LEI), part of Wageningen University and Research Centre.

Low cost price

Contrary to Europe, no specific legislation exists with regard to animal welfare in Argentina. Animal related legislation is restricted to food safety and product quality. This, however, does not mean that animals automatically suffer from worse environmental conditions, as broilers and finisher pigs usually have plenty of space as area and housing costs are low – and due to the climate.

For layers and breeding sows, housing conditions are clearly worse than in North Westen Europe. Especially for layers, surface are is considerably lower than currently in Europe and even more so in comparison to minimum requirements as from 2012.

To get animal welfare in the layer and breeding sow sector at the level of EU standards, a profound change of the Argentinean livestock industry is necessary. New systems like enriched cages or free range housing for layers and group housing for sows.

The poultry and pig sector in Argentina. Husbandry practice and animal welfare.

Talking of the Pork/Hog Meat

If you pours Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, wait a little while, you will SEE WORMS crawl out of it.

A message from the Health Corporation of Singapore about the Bad effects of pork consumption. Pig's bodies contain MANY TOXINS, WORMS and LATENT DISEASES.

Although some of these infestations are harboured in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far MORE PREDISPOSED to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because PIGS like to SCAVENGE and will eat ANY kind of food, INCLUDING dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta including their own, garbage, and other pigs. INFLUENZA (flu) is one of the MOST famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is haboured in the LUNGS of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and human in the cooler months.

Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who EAT pork sausage tend to SUFFER MORE during EPIDEMICS of INFLUENZA. Pig meat contains EXCESSIVE quantities of HISTAMINE and IMIDAZOLE compounds, which can lead to ITCHING and INFLAMMATION; GROWTH HORMONE which PROMOTES INFLAMMATION and growth; sulphur containing mesenchymal mucus which leads to SWELLING and deposits of MUCUS in tendons and cartilage, resulting in ATHRITIS, RHEUMATISM, etc.

Sulphur helps cause FIRM human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage.

Eating pork can also lead to GALLSTONES and OBESITY, probably due to its HIGH CHOLESTEROL and SATURATED FAT content. The pig is the MAIN CARRIER of the TAENIE SOLIUM WORM, which is found in its flesh. These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This type of tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage. One in six people in the US and Canada has TRICHINOSIS from eating trichina worms, which are found in pork.

Many people have NO SYMPTOMS to warm them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses. These worms are NOT noticed during meat inspections.

Circulating alone for several years, this chain letter has recently been added to a collection of culinary caveats on previously 'unknown' hazards in instant noodles, satay and prawns. The present rumor builds on two staples of urban legendry: the impurity of pork and the acidic properties of Coca-Cola.

It has long been held that, in comparison to other meats, pork is comparatively less pure because of the scavenging and slothful lifestyle of the animal from which it comes. In fact, some religions hold that swine are unclean and should not be consumed, lest they soil the consumer.

Regardless of religion, many of us were taught that eating raw or undercooked pork causes food poisoning known as trichinosis, a disease caused by parasitic worms. The (U.S.) National Pork Board, which has led a very aggressive on-farm food safety research program since 1994, addresses the presence of parasites in "the Other White Meat":

"Because of modern feeding practices, trichinosis is a no longer a concern. Although trichina is virtually nonexistent in pork, if it were present, it would be killed at 137 degrees F. That's well below the recommended end cooking temperature for pork, which is 160 degrees F."

The (U.S.) National Pork Producer's Council points out that pork has been given a bad rap and is the world most widely eaten meat:
"Pigs are often thought to be dirty, but actually keep themselves cleaner than most pets that we have in our homes. They are seen laying in mud because they do not have sweat glands and constantly need water or mud to cool off."

As the chain letter above points out, Pork is generally considered less lean and less healthy than other selections in the meat case. However, the National Pork Board explains that, while this used to be the case, modern pork production has come a long way:

"Today's pig yields a pork loin with 77% less fat - and 53% fewer calories!

"Hogs and hog production have evolved to meet growing - and changing - demands for pork. With a declining need for many products once made from fat hogs, today's leaner hogs better meet the needs of Americans. In 1937 much of a hog went toward producing lard. Today, lean meat replaces much of that fat.

"Today's pork producer combines genetics with improved production techniques and technology to deliver the leaner pork consumers demand."

The other alleged links between porcine and human health (influenza, inflammation, arthritis, etc) made in the chain letter above are unsupported by any medical literature I've been able to find.

The second legend this chain letter propagates is that Coke is acidic enough to force a supposed parasitic infestation from the meat. There are no magical properties in Coca-Cola that will cause some grotesque transformation in pork or any other meat. In fact, about the only thing pouring Coke on a piece of raw pork will produce is a yummy-sweet marinade for grilling or roasting. Read this article for more on the rumored health risks of Coca-cola.

If you have concerns about the fitness of pork as a part of your diet, consult your physician. Don't give any purchase to an anonymously authored and randomly forwarded e-mail chain letter. Break this chain.

Personally I will say fish farming is more lucrative because there is a ready market unlike piggery for which people's religious and traditional beliefs creates a bias against purchasing or eating pigs. Besides fish are easier and cheaper to cultivate and have higher turnover rates
