Audi A6 (2005) How Realiable? by midexus(m): 3:24pm On Feb 23, 2009
Hello All,

I am about to buy the Audi A6 but quite a number of people are claiming it has a lot of issues.

Can someone help with an informed opinion on this car?

Thank you

Without an engine type, hard to advice you.

Petrol engines range from the smallest (1,8L 20V turbo) to the largest (4,2L 40V V8).
Diesel engines range from the smallest (1,9 TDI) to the largest (2,5 TDI).

Then you've got quattro and front wheel drive models, with all the above engine options.
If you give an idea what model you're interested in, I can advice you accordingly.
I'm a VAG independent specialist, and know Audi inside out.

What issues do folk claim they have?
So far, their statements are vague.

Thanks a lot for the response.

I am looking at the smallest engine possible with the quattro option. ( I mean i would prefer the 3.2L to the 4.2L)
I wouldn't know if there is a smaller engine for the 2005 A6

I would want to know how expensive the maintenance is, fuel consumption and known trouble spots

I will tell you my sincere opinion about this. It is better for you to get an Audi A4 instead of the A6.There are lots of issues with the A6 and the parts are very xpensive. The A4 is very stable. Good luck.

Yes o, i will advice for the A6, because A6 30 valve is powerful than A4 in any size. Why am am telling that, i am Volkswagen/Audi specailist. The maintanace depend on you and the mechanic that repair your car. V/W-AUDI is not a car that any road side mechanic can handle anyhow. Anyway free diagnosis on VW/AUDI is on now till 2 weeks in my workshop 08027538378

I don't buy that - the  30V engine is common to both A4 and A6.

Issues with the A6? I must have missed them, what are they?
Both A4 and A6 are mechanically similar, how could the issues afflict the A6, and not the A4??

Hello Siena,

I've been an Audi / VW independent since 1994.

So far, no particular issues with the range, any more than any other manufacturer.
"Issues" are generally caused by "tinkerers" parading as "engineers", who know little or nothing about how an automobile works, and should not be allowed to service a lawnmower, never mind a car!

The 3,189cc (3,2) is a good engine, it's the same engine that powers the Porsche Cayenne 3,2.

I'd say it's underpowered though, for a relatively heavy car, (but then, I'm a car nut) I'd go for the 4,2L anyday.

Just make sure whichever car you buy has a full service history, ask the seller what ownership was like, and why he / she's selling. If possible, get the car inspected independently (I offer a 130-point inspection, and am available) wink That way you don't get a lemon.
