When I got to work this morning, I found my colleagues discussing about the 9 Billion Naira that would be given to the Federal Lawmakers as Wardrobe allowance. I did not believe it. I actually told them that the money was not just for Wardrobe allowance, but also for Housing, car loan, furniture etc. It was after sometime that I got to find out that the money was just for wardrobe allowance. Then we started discussing and wondering the effect 9 billion naira would have on the Ministry. So here it goes-

1. With 9 Billion naira, the salary of the 60 people who were recruited in the Junior Cadre sometime in March 2014 would be paid.

2. The First 28 Days and Kilometre Allowance of the about 200 Foreign Affairs Officers that were recruited in February 2013 would be paid. First 28 days has turned to first 28 months and counting.

3, Clothing Allowance of level 10-17 Officers that was not paid in 2014 would be paid, also, clothing allowance of level 7-17 for 2015 would also be paid.

4. Over 100 Foreign Affairs Officers that were recruited in 2013 are yet to go to the Foreign Service Academy in Lagos for a One-Year Training programme in Diplomacy, which is against the Public Service Rules of 2008 which stipulates that an FAO is supposed to attend and complete the FSA programme within 2 years of employment. With the 9 billion Naira, there would be no need to move the FSA from Lagos to Abuja and to also sell the school and those who are yet to go for the programme would have long gone.

5. With 9billion naira, the other 100 FAOs who were recruited in 2013 and have since completed the FSA programme would have gone for One Year Attachment Programme in Nigerian Missions abroad.

6. With 9billion naira, staff of the Ministry would be able to get payments for official travels done in the name of the Federal Government. There would be no need for anyone to use his/her money to travel on behalf of the Federal Government and at the end the Government won't be able to pay because there is no money.

7. With 9 billion naira, the Ministry would be able to clear the debts owed Internet Service Providers which amounts to over 300 million naira, and this led the ISP to disconnect the Ministry. So, at the moment, there is no Internet Connection in the Ministry and this prevents most Officers from performing functions.

8. With 9 billion, MFA would be able to pay contractors who provide cleaning and security services to the massive complex in Abuja. Most of the firms have been unable to pay staff working for them in the Ministry in months and this affects their performance.
A Ministry of over 2500 staff is unable to cater for her needs, while a bunch of 469 men are about to be given the sum of 9 billion naira for just wardrobe allowance.

This is a government who claims that there is no money in Nigeria and that it is a period of austerity measures, yet, she can't spare the sum of 9billion naira for some lawmakers who have more than enough.

Yes, I know the 9 billion naira won't be able to offset the total debts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but it would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the staff.

Why must the masses suffer for the mistakes of the ruling class? It is not our fault that the people who we voted to protect our interest were not able to do the job perfectly well.

Well, I hope and pray that it is a mere rumour and it won't be implemented.
