Bauchi State Government Insists That All Private Schools Close For Five Weeks by HFOG(f): 8:18pm On Jun 17, 2015
At the beginning of this session, the Bauchi state government sent a calendar to schools insisting that in June all private primary and secondary schools in the state must close for five weeks because the Muslims would be fasting during that period. The association of proprietors wrote a letter refusing this new law but the state government met with proprietors last Monday that is day before yesterday. In the meeting the government threatened to lock all private schools that will open next week using the Police Force and other security agents. As a proprietor I'm wondering what step I can take considering the adverse effects this law would have especially on the pupils. How would they close now only to resume after a month to write exams about topics they've been taught over two months ago? My next challenge is the instability of the fasting period. It keeps changing depending on the moon. In other words the third term calendar for the schools can not be fixed. Long vacation must be shifted continually to ensure that it falls during the fasting period.

Then why should it involve the private schools for God's sake? I think they're just using it excuse as a camouflague but it seems they have an agenda to bring all schools in the state under an Islamic calendar. The employees of all the private schools what would they be doing and eating for the next two months for Pete's sake? By the way, amen to your hearty prayers.

What rubbish! At times I hear policies and I marvel. 5wks is too long a period to stay off school for such reason as Ramadan. Before now, students have been schooling even during Ramadan. Why should this be different?

This is coming on the backdrop of a hurried second term all thanks to the presidential election, then this? That it's predominantly a Muslim state doesn't make it a Muslim state

The only way I see is for NAPPS to still meet the state government again for more deliberation. Aside that, the state law(s) will supercede individual/group desires

Unfortunately their illiterate thugs on the streets are already protesting to see which private school is resisting their religion. Such backwardness and darkness. I never cease to wonder if these people are humans at all.

hahaha, some people are just like that. Soon we'll hear them say cutoff point into unity schools should be reduced for their state.

Policies here and there baffles me these day. Even this new 9yrs basic education curriculum is not too different from the previous one but they brandish it like it's something totally different

I keep praying that God'll deliver us from evil. Everything about them - their thoughts, lifestyle, words, actions, religion - is continually evil. Ain't beans living with them. It's more like Lot whose righteous soul was daily vexed by those sodomites.

Cash is not my main issue here. Even though we've not collected all we'll eventually collect it. Remember our environment is different. Moreover the state government has been owing her workers for some months now. Once we close this Friday to reopen last week of July no staff would expect salaries till early August. We usually pay staff during the holidays but this is different. That said, if it's only from my point of view I sincerely do not have a challenge. We'll simply go on a vacation. But how long would I be self-centred? Life isn't just about me na. Maturity and Christianity demands I consider others first which I joyfully do. I'm just thinking about the the effect this time lapse will have on the pupils. How do they resume after a month to write exams on what they've learnt over two months ago? How wouldn't it affect their performance? I'm also thinking about the staff. We employ about 20. Multiply that across the schools. What happens to their work and food during this compulsory break? Do you think they have any moral justification to request for pay without work knowing fully well that government has closed schools? What about the Christian parents that'll be going to work? What or where would they keep their kids? Would they prepare emergency journey and take sudden leave to take them home? This arrangement automatically nullifies long vacation. It gives only 2-3weeks break before the new session. The ripple effect I'm seeing here is way beyond my pocket. Whether we have this break now or not it sincerely doesn't affect fees. Parents will eventually pay. They always do. Our environment is not like yours where they pay before resumption sef. We go slowly but steadily so that one isn't an issue really.

the pay issue was a little digression to ease things up.

I do understand all the points raised and I agree with them. I understand the effect isn't on one party but on all. The kids are the most hit by this decision.

I'm not sure creche should close too afterall it's not school. As for the salary for workers, it has to be paid. It's painful but necessary
