A-Ibom royal fathers place curse on kidnappers
Written by Samuel Oyadongha

UYO—Traditional Rulers in Akwa Ibom State have in unison laid curses on kidnappers terrorizing the state for weeks now.
At the first ever enlarged town hall meeting with Governor Godswill Akpabio, held at Ibom Hall in Uyo, yesterday, the paramount rulers, clan heads and the village heads drawn from the 31 local government areas called on God to intervene, expose and kill kidnappers who are in the habit of taking innocent people captive.

The session led by the paramount ruler of Nsit Ubium, Edidem James Robert Obot, expressed anger at the incessant kidnapping of people.

Edidem Obot said; “We as royal fathers and custodians of our tradition hereby decree that whatever we curse is cursed, and whatever we bless is blessed.

Today, we decree unanimously that kidnapping is cursed in Akwa Ibom.”

The Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs, Edidem Ime Umoette, complained of the attitude of police to the traditional rulers whenever they volunteer information that would lead to nipping crimes, particularly kidnapping in the bud.

Edidem Umoette declared “Death penalty on kidnappers” and appealed to the governor to call the police to order. “Kidnapping is for a short while and very soon, it will pass away”, he remarked.

The royal fathers had blamed lack of welfare, lack of mobility and desecration of the institution by the judiciary, uncooperative attitude by the police to them as factors responsible for a surge in crime rate in the rural areas.

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, who summoned the meeting remarked that “There is no place in this state where a group of people would hide to kidnap people, yet the village heads of such villages are not aware”.

Akpabio who described them as leaders in their communities pointed out that “I am disturbed that our children are misled to thinking that they can make kidnapping a major means of livelihood”.

He told the traditional fathers “My opinion is that you know the bad and good children in your domain, though some people are always afraid to expose the bad eggs with the belief that they could return and attack the informant”.

The governor stressed the need for them to partner with the State government security wise in an effort by the government to eliminate kidnapping from the State.

“I am sure no kidnapper would drive us out of this state rather we would drive them away. No traditional ruler should tolerate the crime. By helping us to eliminate the crime instead of collaborating with the criminals, you are protecting the traditional stool you inherited from your father”, Chief Akpabio asserted.

He announced donation of new cars to clan heads in the state and review of the stipend of village heads from N18,000 to N25,000, that of clan heads from N35,000 to N50,000 and that of paramount rulers from N100,000 to N150,000 with effect from January, this year.

I abhor juju and idol worship

But

There is no evidence whatsoever that people were killed in Okija shrine
There is evidence however that family members of some dead went and dumped their bodies at the shrine because they were said to have been killed by the alusi okija (okija deity).
That;s what I read

Am with osisi on this one, I abhor juju worship but am quiet sure that more than 80% of the bad name Okija shrine got was politically motivated.

Placing curse on Kidnappers will not stop them, since it is spiritual then it will work maybe after 5-10 years.

Tamme

Let me educate you on the things you dont know about the working of OKIJATM.

Understanding The Okija Shrine Phenomenon And The Art Of Mental Poisoning:
Just Before The Rush To Judgement

For those who have not followed the events at Okija shrine, I will try to recap very briefly the gist of what was discovered at Okija shrine. Following a tip off, a team of Police men led by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police Felix Ogbaudu visited the Okija shrine where they made some gruesome discovery. Headless bodies, human corpses, skulls, and a register of names were found at the various shrines in Okija. The Okija shrine is a place where people with disputes in their personal transactions have gone for adjudication by the gods. The guilty party usually died within a year and the priests at the shrine would demand the dead body and all material possessions of the victim which included millions of naira. Notable amongst the clients of this shrine were the late Chief Victor Okafor a.k.a Ezego who reportedly had a dispute with one Nzeribe a member of the House of Representatives. Ezego died in a ghastly motor accident believed to have been caused by the gods. His body was amongst those discovered by the Police and according to the Police it had a very conspicuous name tag. Apart from the dead body, the family of the deceased was ordered to turn over millions of naira owned by the deceased or the gods would visit their anger on the living which the family of the deceased complied with.

But the Police have a different version. According to the Police, only the richest of the party in the dispute is always guilty. The agents of the shrine trailed the individual and placed poison or charms on their cars while some were forced to drink some concoction after which the person died. The leader of the chief priests happens to be a certain Ndukwu who reportedly owns property in Lagos valued at millions of naira.

In response to this discovery, the Secretary General of the Igbo cultural organization, Ohaneze ,Colonel Achuzia accused the Police of trying to ridicule the Igbos and their tradition. A number of notable Igbos have distanced themselves from the views of Achuzia.

Again writing under the title ‘Okija: The Politics of Shrines’ one Theophilus Abbah in the Sunday PUNCH of August 15,claims the Okija shrine is a secret cult and goes on to cite the constitutional provisions that barred cult members from Government. The insinuation is that Governor Ngige and other government functionaries that patronized the shrine are cult members. This gross display of ignorance and irresponsible journalism is the bane of Nigerian journalism that has encouraged every thing that is bad in the Nigerian society as well as mis-inform the people.

Traditional religion has been painted in bad light and the purpose of this article is to examine the aspects of religion that is involved and try to differentiate the practices under Police scrutiny and authentic traditional religion.

The Royal Fathers should spit more CURSES.
They should walk around naked spewing venomous curses on the heads of these kidnappers.
Akwa Ibom and Abia are too notorious for violent crimes.

To the best of my knowledge, this is a hint on how Okidja shrine in Okidja town works:

Okidja shrine is undoubtfuly a powerful deity; a very powerful one I must say.
It is where people from all nooks and cranny of Africa if not the world go take oath as opposed to the type people usually do in the court of law. In fact, Okidja shrine is a traditional court of law.
All sort of people who wish to safeguard their fair interests in a deal; be it business, political, relationships, money lenders and borrowers troop to this place to take an oath before the shrine along with whoever they are making the agreement with.
In failure to fulfill your own part of the oath/agreement brings about death. But before the shrine sentences the offender to death; it usually sends out its workers with written letters to inform the offender and his family the need to report to the shrine and state his case. And in a situation where the offender is not reached; the case becomes pending even if it will have to take a life time to make sure the offender gets the warning firsthand.
After the offender must have been reached and warned up to 3 times without him showing up to defend himself, pay the stipulated fine or apologize to who he offended; he is struck with death. As soon as he dies, the shrine workers will immediately alert his family to come and deposit the offenders corpse in the shrine premises (the corpse stays fresh and doesnt decay even without treatment) which the media showed on TV a few years ago and if the family refuses to do as told, the lineage of the offender begins to die one after the other unless the family has a strong spiritual backing (JESUS).

Many will recall that when ezego of ihiala was buried, it was a plastic molded in his shape that was buried in his home while his family took the original body to the shrine as an offender. Before the time the government invaded the deity, his body was still laying fresh there. The MADONA university students can attest to this.
Okidja shrine started having its problem when Ngige couldnt keep an oath of paying chris uba 3 billion he agreed to pay within 3 months he's made the governor. Ngige decided to publicly play victim. Fortunately for him, Anambrarians have begun to abhor deity worship and also were already tired of being held on ransom by crooks like chris uba, so they supported the move to get rid of Okidja shrine .

Of course, the shrine is too dangerous for one to get involved with in the first place.
The Okidja shrine does not go after people who does not have skeletons in their cupboards. It does not help anybody make blood money or stuffs like that. It does not go about cutting people's heads for rituals like how its done in other par of the world. It warns the offenders several times before it strikes.
It is simply a traditional court of law that one must not get involved with if you cannot keep your oath.

Less we forget, I am a christian, but if this is how this deity works, then the Bible is not wrong by saying this;

Give to cezar that of cezar's and to Oga Jesus what he owns.
(i stand to be corrected)

Nope, that was why I said that anyone who has problems with the way it laws operate should not go near the place or get involved with people who use the shrine as a witness for an agreement. But if you do; then give to cezar what it owns and to your own god what it owns.

B.T.W, in a society where there is no truth in the court of law and a society that has her rich and powerful oppress the poor and the weak; places like okidja shrine will always exist as the best alternative for the oppressed.

You have the wisdom of an elder. I respect you.

Please inform these folks that there are things they dont mess with. OKIJATM
If the courts can pronounce death on people, why cant the gods pronounce death on someone. If God could kill off the entire world under Noah, why cant OKIJATM place leprosy on an offender??

Your gods can kill others with no problems yet ours cant kill anyone?? I wonder what the definition of hypocrisy really is??

Even then. . . . . . .There are other ways of punishing people without killing them.
The shrine should be raided n destroyed. They are running a parallel court which is not legal by any means.

Interesting.
I used to think the Igbo people embraced Christianity more than others in Nigeria. This is shocking.
