DELSU POST UTME APTITUDE TEST LECTURE 1: ANAGRAM

Delsu POST UTME EXAM is the hardest POST UTME EXAM in Nigeria. Unlike

UNILAG and some other universities that your are required to answer 25

questions in all or so, in DELSU POST UTME EXAM all candidate is required

to answer 100 questions within ihour or less.


DELSU POST UTME consists of three part which are stated below


part 1: English Language comprises of 25 questions
part 2: Aptitude Test comprises of 25 questions
part 3: General Paper comprises of 50 questions
Total number of question is equal to 100 questions


Whatever department you applied for, irrespective of your course, you are

required to answer 25 questions on English and 25 questions on aptitude

test. From my personal interview with different student who have written

DELSU POST UTME, 95% just guess their answers in the Aptitude test

section. This has a negative effect on their overall score. This has made

some not to reach the school cut-off mark or made them to be given a other

course which is not their wish.


Most of the DELSU POST UTME PAST QUESTIONS just ommit this part in their

compillation, which other just make a guess answer also to fill space.

This is because most of the aptitude test are taken from job aptitude

test, and unfortunately, most of these instructor have never been exposed

to this type of questions before, hence they find it difficult to tackle.

The first topic i will be discussing is ANAGRAM
For some this may be the first time of hearing this word but this was

among the aptitude test that was written by those who took the 2014 DELSU

POST UTME EXAM.


Imagine you see something like this in your examination


For each number below (39 & 40) identify the anagram to the given word
39. EARTH W Planet X Ear Y Heart Z Universe
40. DIET W Food X Die Y Tied Z Nutrition


If you donot know what ANAGRAM is, it will take you 10 to 15 minutes for a

shart student to be able to understand this question, and you have less

than 30 seconds for each questions. Others will just close their eyes and

guess the answer and continue.


In many of the past questions i have seen, they choose the answer as
39. Y
40. Y


The answers is perfectly correct but there is no explaination as to why it

is Y and Y.


For the lazy student they will just take note of the answer with the mind

that in this year DELSU POST UTME, the same question will be repeated so

that they just pick the answer.


Now let say, by chance, thesame questions is repeated below


For each number below (39 & 40) identify the anagram to the given word
39. EARTH W Hater X Ear Y Palms Z Universe
40. DIET W Tide X Die Y Meal Z Nutrition


So what is the answer?


Is it Y AND Y again? The answer is no Y Heart and Y Tied are not in the

option, so you see why you need an explaination.


Let go back to the first questions again


39. EARTH W Planet X Ear Y Heart Z Universe
40. DIET W Food X Die Y Tied Z Nutrition
39. Answer Y
40. Answer y


On their own some student may infer that since EARTH contain five letter,

then the answer is the one that contain five letter.
W Planet contains 6 letter
X Ear contain 3 letter
Y Heart contain 5 letter
Z Universe contain 8 letter
and since the answer is Y its now make since. But that is not true.


look at the second questions 40
DIET contains 4 letter
W Food contain 4letter
X Die contain 3 letter
Y Tied contain 4 letter
Z Nutrition contain 9 letter
If we want to go by the above principle, the answer should either be W

Food or Y Tied but the correct answer is Y


You see that in aptitude test, thesame questions can be set but the answer

can also be different. That is why you need explanation.


So how do we go about this?


First let know what is anagram?


ANAGRAM is a word or phrase the letters of which can be rearranged into

another word or phrase.


With this definition, you can solve any puzzle on ANAGRAM
1. The alphabet must be thesame
2. The alphabet is only rearrange to form another word


Like the example given above
EARTH E=1 A=2 R=3 T=4 H=5
Heart H=5 e=1 a=2 r=3 t=4

The questions on "OOD ONE OUT" has been repeated consistently in the APTITUDE TEST section of DELSU POST UTME EXAMINATION in the past three years. This questions is different from ODD MAN OUT questions, another similiar questions that is also ask in DELSU POST UTME EXAMINATION.

Ok let get started.

Let the word odd not confuse you. To solve questions on odd one out, you are given four option. Each of the option may be similiar but take note of their relationship with one another. Three of the option will be related to each other in a way, while the forth one will not follow that relationship.

Let take an example from last year DELSU POST UTME PAST QUESTION.



Identify the ODD one in the options for each number

30. W Yen X 'Pounds Y Naira Z Dollar

From a quick look at the four option, all are similiar in a way. They are all currency used by different countries.
Japan uses yen
United Kingdom uses pounds
Nigeria uses Naira
united state uses dollar

So you see that each is similiar to each other in a way ( they are all currency used by different countries)

But in relation to each other, we will notice one is diffrent. You will agree with me that in relationship with naira, all the other are foreign currency. Only Naira that is not foreign currency. Hence the correct option is Y

NOTE: Always look how each other is related to the other, then we can easily separate the odd one out.

look at another questions taken from DELSU POST UTME PAST QUESTIONS OF 2014.

Identify the ODD one in the options for each number

29. W NECO X WAEC Y. NABTEB Z JAMB

From a quick look, you will see that all are similiar because they are all examination taken by student.

But in relation to one another, you will find out that WAEC, NECO AND NABTEB are equivalent but JAMB IS NOT. Hence JAMB is the odd one out.

Ok, let get down to business.

In the 2014 DELSU POST UTME EXAM, this was among the questions that comes out under the APTITUDE TEST SECTION.

Imagine, if you are among the candidates writing the DELSU POST UTME EXAM last year and you see questions like this:

Select the correct simile that best completes each expression below
36. As clear as W White Y Crystal X Glass Z Snow
37. As proud as a __ W Peacock X Pnnce Y King Z Star



For some it will take some time to really pick the correct answer as this type of questions is not set by JAMB or WAEC.Other will

just rush and select any answers that appeal to them which might likely be the wrong answers.


A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things. In each sentence, a word is being compared to something else.


In standard English there is only one form of simile acceptable which may be different from that in our locality. What do i mean. Let

take an example on slow.

To classify slow it may be acceptable to say
1. as slow as a turtle
2. as slow as a snake
3. as slow as a millipede

These animal are slow but in standard enlish as in an examination, you can only see "as slow as a snake". You will never see the

other two (1&3). So in standard simile, it is either you know it or not. There is no two ways about it.

In DELSU POST UTME most of the questions are from animal simile with some few from object simile. once you know it, you know it and

it is thesame thing that you will see in the day of your examination.

OK. LET GET BACK TO THE QUESTIONS ABOVE

In the above you will agree that crystal and glass carry the sense of being clear more than white and snow.

But in standard english, only as clear as crystal is acceptable. Anothe simile that goes with clear is mud as in "As clear as mud"

The second has to do with the character "proud". Most student will quickly pick either prince or king and both are wrong.

Most of the simile that deals with character are animal simile. Remember what simile is(A simile is a figure of speech that compares

two different things. In each sentence, a word is being compared to something else.)

Since what is being compare is a character exhibited by human being, we cannot use human being to compare human being. That rule out

king and prince. Star is an inanimate abject(object that donot have life, hence the only option left, which is the correct option is

peacock


QUESTION 38 is a little bit confusing. Without thinking one will quickly choose pastor but this is wrong. In standard English what we

have is " as devoted as a mother"
