Recently some Nigerians are clamoring that Nigeria should go back to the era of Regionalism Which allows each region to develop at its pace as a panacea for national development. In your own view, do you subscribe to this call as an alternative to this current system?

Ofcourse regionalism is the best form of administrative set up that could afford the amalgamating entities the space they need to culturaly, politically, economicaly, educationaly develope at their own pace. It would have also fostered a healthy competition amongst the regional units as ethnic/tribal and religious rivalries inherent in our relations today will find decent platforms to be expressed. The regional groups will also be big enough to stimulate a reasonable level of economic activities big enough to permit the regions enough administrative space to take care of their citizens. In so many ways it is better, it will cut administrative costs by lowering recurrent expenditures since what it takes to run a state today might be almost what you may need to run a region. It will lessen the cut-throat competition for power at the center, douse the fear of marginalisation to a reasonable extent while generating a reasonable level of emotional/patriotic attachement between the citizen and the regions and by extension the state. . The federal structure as we have it today is totally removed from the people. The states are alien, weak, run more like a unitary arrangement and some are so unproductive. Treu regionalism will be a massive improvement.

I equally agree but wat of d inevitable of who will emerge as regional leader. Yoruba as a case study, will Tinubu, Mimiko, Fayose, Akande, Bode George, e.t.c. be submissive to each, other?, and won't it lead us to dis same destination

This concern has been expressed many times by both genuine supporters and mischivious oppponents of regionalism whenever this issue is being discussed. The fact is that we tend to underate the enermous negative influence from the center in Abuja as it regards choosing who is politically viable in the dififerent comatose regions that form the present day Nigeria. In a treu regional arrangement, devoid of the deblitating manipulations that have characterised Abuja relations with the component units since the demise of the regions in the 60s, the cultural realities dominant in this units will play a big role in throwing up the kind of leadership acceptable to the regions. In the 60s, the electorate in the west stuck with Awolowo and fought street battles against federal government sponsored Akintola. It was the same in the east, where Azikiwe held sway. You may no agree with Awo and zik , but the fact that they commanded a reasonable amount of respect from their different regional cnsttuencies is not in question. Bottomline: it will be better for the electorates in the different regions to decide and control their regional leadership under a strong regional arrangement than we have today.
