its basically so it doesnt seem like there is a vaccum in the kingship position because i believe kingship is rotated among ruling houses and it might take a while to select the next king. but the regents are guided by the chiefs in making the right decision and they are respected as kings by the people both male and female.
Re: Female Regents In Yoruba Land. by JingoOAU(m): 7:13pm On Aug 02, 2015
So common with folks from Ondo and ekiti states

it signifies that women can be trusted with leadership positions which is what people are fighting for in the 21st century. why dont you go tell the queen of England to hand over because her reign is not relevant in the 21st century.

Ife had a yoruba Ooni. The 21st Ooni, Luwoo was a woman.

You are wrong. Queen Victoria was one of the greatest rulers the world ever had. She was so good they called her Grandmother of Europe and Empress of India. Nigeria also had the Warrior Queen Amina of Zazzau(Zaria), so what are you on about

wow. that is really impressive but i doubt that will be possible nowadays. with the whole politics that goes on fr the kingship of even smaller kingdoms, it will be almost impossible to have a female ooni in this century.

The first place during my travels I noticed that is in Ayede Ekiti and the Regents normally dress like a man but what surprises me is that after they crowned a new king the woman refused stop dressing like a man and insist nobody can do anything about it.

I believe this tradition is restricted to Ondo and Ekiti States, I have never heard of a regency practise amongst the Oyos, Ifes, Egbas and other Yoruba group west of Ondo and Ekiti at least in the recent time. I strongly believe these two states have an earlier aboriginal tradition that existed prior to the time the major Yoruba influx and migration came, the influx came with a superior culture which swallowed the existing one on ground, albeit a whole lot of traces can still be found in terms of this regency thing, even in our dialects, our mode of music, dance steps and drumming.
