Lagos Engine Room For Nigeria’s Growth, Devt – Ambode by Nobody: 8:01pm On Aug 02, 2015
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Sunday, led
top chieftains and lawmakers of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) to receive a delegation of US Congress, led
by Congressman Darelle Issa, where he said that the state is
the citadel for growth and development of Nigeria.
Speaking at an interactive session with the US delegation at
the Lagos House, Marina, where issues bothering on
deepening democracy, trade relations and tackling Boko
Haram insurgency taking centre stage at the meeting,
Governor Ambode said the US democratic experience was
one that would be beneficial not only to Lagos, but also to
Nigeria.
The Governor commended the US government for its role in
ensuring the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections,
saying that the country has benefitted from their democratic
credentials.
“The parliamentary structure that we have is synonymous
with what is obtainable in the US. APC as a party is the first
in the history of Nigeria to unseat an incumbent government
and we want to imbibe the tenets of democratic values”, the
Governor said.
Governor Ambode also told his visitors that the state
leverages on its population and cosmopolitan nature and
perhaps the most buoyant economy in West Africa.
“I want to let you know that you are in the commercial
capital of Nigeria, Lagos represents the future citadel of
entrepreneurship in this country. As we speak, the
population is nearing 21 million of which four million are
actually middle class. We’re the fifth largest economy in
Africa and our GDP has hit $131billion, more than 42 African
countries put together”, he said.
He said the thrust of his administration is to be able to touch
as many lives as possible and make life easier for residents,
saying that the state government is committed to pursuing
this ideal in the next four years.
To achieve this, the Governor said his administration is
ready to entrench moral leadership, saying that it would
latch on to the experience of the US to better the lot of its
people.
“As we proceed, the party is committed to learning the best
ideals of democracy and that’s where I want to take this
advantage to learn from you. We want to be transparent, we
want to be credible, we want to bring a leadership to the
table that is open, we want a government of inclusion, we
don’t want to leave the people behind.
Lagos is more like New York because it is a cosmopolitan
state where the largest concentration of foreigners lives. So
it’s important that everyone is carried along, we’re
committed to that”, he said.
He listed the areas of collaboration the state government
was looking towards improving upon to include security and
trade relations.
Earlier, Congressman Issa Darelle, a Republican, explained
that though America could be viewed as possessing high
democratic values it was also striving towards perfection of
democracy, urging that rather than emulate the American
democracy, Nigeria should strive to better the America
experience.
He also urged Lagos State to as a matter of urgency,
collaborate with the Federal Government, in tackling issues
of insecurity issues in the country, especially the Boko
Haram menace, saying the fight could not be left alone for
the government at the centre to handle.
Among those in attendance at the interactive session include members of U.S Congress, Carolyn Manoney, Sheila Jackson Lee and Blake Farenthold, Chairman, Lagos APC, Otunba Henry Ajomale (right), Women Leader, South West APC, Mrs.Kemi Nelson (3rd left), Acting U.S Consul General in Lagos, Ms. Dehab Ghebreab (2nd left) and the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, House of Representatives and State Assembly lawmakers from Lagos, among others.

Wow lagos gdp is now $131 billion. This is their federal allocation compared to kano:
Lagos N168 billion,
Kano N140 billion.
Surely, the northerners must thanking their luck as to how short sightedgentle the SWest people are. Tell me a country where this kind of robbery happens. Not even 1% of the gdp for goodness sake.

What Change? I like pmb but you guys needs to see the bigger picture. Isn't it disturbing more than 99% of the money is going to the federal government? Lagos is being stretched to the limit hence why the human development index is one of the lowest among the big cities in the world. The fact no one seems to care is disturbing

Nothing could be farther from the truth. I think Tinubu, Ambode and the Lag legislators (ibfact the entite SW lawmakers sef) need to take this up with the FG. Na serious case of highway robbery. The state gets PEANUTS in return relative to the contribution it makes. It's not fair one bit.

This is not about One Nigeria, it is about fairness. The Niger-Deltans fought for their 13% derivation. Why can't the south west also get special derivation for its contribution to the federal coffers? This is about fairness.

Love coverth all sins.

During census they were told that Kano was more populated than Lagos, they accepted it bc the NPC was a Gambari and President an Odua.

Now Kano without virtually anything to the center is getting more allocation than those bringing something.
The price of oil is down, Lagos will bear the brunt of Nigeria revenue generation why Kano collects with her 44 LGs.

How can you fix slums when the state doesn't have the money. Their budget is barely enough to keep it running without loans and all sorts.

The issue is this.

I was in Ogun state on December 2011 around Lambe/Akute/Ajuwon area, I saw one massive project the governor embarked on two big flyovers that will connect those areas to Berger Bus stop.

Last month I was chatting with my sister who lives around that axis, she told me they are suffering bad road, I asked what happened to the massive flyovers and bridges the governor was building she said they are abandoned at 40percent completion.
Now Ogun State is collecting how much from federal allocation despite accommodating many coys that pay taxes to FG, how many LGs does ogun have, how many does Lagos has.

Kano have 44LGs when Jigawa was still inside Kano, we Jigawa was carved out of Kano, Kano still retain her 44 LGs while another 23 germinated in the newly created Jigawa from nowhere.
So does it mean Kano was having 77LGs before the creation of Jigawa.

Now Ogun couldn't complete all her projects because she has many schools to pay teachers salaries from meagre allocation while Kano that have lesser schools that the most backward state in the south will always have enough money to play around.

Open your eyes, when Igbos point out all these lopsidedness of the Nigeria state you people will tag us cry babies and wailers.

Niger Delta oil is down, all eyes on Lagos and surrounding economies down south because the North is barren.

Have you seen where Northerners sell their cows in Lagos along Agege Railway line, go and see how that place but they will make the money and return it to North without renovating the place and paying any tax, this is their way in East, all the garikis in East are dirty and stinking because of livestock dungs.

Southerners are bunch of stuupid and useless people, SE is begging for one more state to balance it to 6 but North Central as 7 states 1 in excess.
These states and bogus LGs are how resources down South are being shared, plundered and looted by the North, if we say they tag us enemies of the state.

Let's see what will happen now, the only revenue generator now is NLNG and Nigeria custom, plus coys in south that pay duties and taxes to FG, oil has gone down South and remedy aint in sight.

They are, because they cannot fund it. Newyork contribute about 13% to the federal government. Do you think they can survive on less than 1% like lagos is currently doing? With more populations and companies, you tends to have more to do in terms of project and providing for people's basic needs.
The roads is pretty relevant because OGUN state government is not getting enough to run the state despite contributing a large sum. You can't compare it to sokoto who only has teachers, policemen to pay. Are you a northerner or YORUBA? I need to understand the context behind your comments. I don't expect a yoruba or an Igbo person to say the roads is not relevant. You can't just give people peanut and say get on with it. I am pissed.
