President Muhammadu Buhari recently dispelled any idea suggesting he was uninterested in engaging in dialogue with genuine members of the Boko Haram sect, sparking elements of the insurgent gang to reach out for proposed negotiation talks.

The extremist sect based in northeastern Nigeria has been perpetrating increasingly sophisticated attacks against soft targets including suicide bombing in major cities in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon and has links with international terrorist group ISIS .

The international community including the United States of America, USA and the United Nations, UN, has repeatedly condemned Boko Haram for perpetrating numerous crimes against humanity.

Buhari during an interview on CNN, pledged to wipe out the sect with the current intelligence-led gathering from neighboring countries and support of the international community.

Reacting to plans to utilize dialogue as a carrot approach towards Boko Haram, he stated that he could not rule out that option.

“I cannot be against it. I told you our main objective as a government is to secure those girls safe and sound back to their schools and rehabilitate them to go back to normal life.
“So if we are convinced that the leadership that presented itself can deliver those girls safe and sound, we would be prepared to negotiate what they want.”

Against this backdrop, the Centre for Crisis Communication, CCC, claimed that some elements from the sect, have reached out to express their desire to be accommodated in the dialogue window.

The Executive Secretary of the Centre, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas (retired) made this disclosure when he said that some elements reached out to the centre to facilitate the dialogue process with the Federal Government.

Reacting to this development, Barrister Zannah Mustapha, founder of Future Prowess Islamic Movement based in Borno blasted the group stating that those seeking for the dialogue could simply be regarded as scammers and fraudulent agents.

He added that the real Boko Haram members were hiding in areas such as the Sambisa forest and its environs.

“We had phantom offers of dialogue in the past that did not yield any positive result and we must not complicate the issue any further. Government and our security forces must not give room for scammers. The real Boko Haram terrorists are in the hinterland; the way they operate is different.
