3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by zPixel(m): 8:06pm On Mar 20, 2009
Introduction

Have decided to create a platform where we 3d artists can come together to compete against which other and most importantly, to learn from each other and see other artists way of doing stuffs. Depending on the progress of this first challenge, i have plans of introducing subsequent ones.

This challenges will be WIP (Work In Progress) based to ensure everyone can learn from each other, offer feedback and critiques, each challenger is required to post work in progress images from model wireframes to textures, shader setups, lighting/rendering and final image. I really hope it will be fun and educative.

Theme

For this challenge, I've chosen something relatively simple. An Alienware computer casing, you can checkout this google link for reference http://images.google.com.ng/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=alienware+desktop&sa=N&start=21&ndsp=21

Instructions

            Rules

  1. Pre-fabricated models cannot be used. Including the use of softwares like Poser and similar ones.
  2. You can't enter more than two entries.
  3. Any image deemed to be the same or similar to one currently published will be disqualified.
  4. No entries will be accepted after the deadline.
  5. Only one final image will be acceptable from each challenger.

           Submissions

  1. The deadline is March 30, 2009
  2. Your final image can be submitted on or before the deadline.

Prize

  1. The complete right to brag.

[li]The overall winner will be determined by how well you perform in the following categories[/li]
1. Modelling
    2. Texturing/shading
    3. Lighting
    4. Final render
[li]A voting system will be implemented. You vote using the following format. 100 is the highest score per category.[/li]

Sounds like fun! I'm putting my money on Grafikdon & Resichild if you dont mind. Hoping to learn a thing or two from real pros. Who's in?
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by stiyke(m): 1:37pm On Mar 21, 2009
you should say the deadline now, who is the judge?? is the judge allowed to post? lol sounds interesting but why devote so much time for just the right to bragging.

?
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by sojioguns(m): 3:07pm On Mar 21, 2009
zPilxel, if you be teacher you go tough oh! You call an Alienware desktop an easy model? Na wah oh. I think you should set an easier model. Maybe a simple mobile phone so modelling should take 1-2 hours. Like stiyke said, I don't think you should commit people to too much work just for bragging rights. I would really love to meet the contestants.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by spyemy(m): 11:30pm On Mar 21, 2009
Saw this thread this morning and decided to give it a try, This is my attempt, it took me 5 long hours before giving up and i could not finish up on detailing and texturing  because I had a freelance stuff to finish for someone and besides there is no reward involved and I really have nothing to brag about,

@pc guru

Guys i really want to learn something here, am a graphics artist/website designer.

I can handle 2D VERY WELL  BUT I really want to go into 3D animation.

WHICH SOFTWARE SHOULD I START WITH?

@stiyke

Has stated in my first post, its a democracy thing we all vote. You're not devoting so much time to bragging alone, you're also devoting time for others to learn and you're also learning.

The deadline is now March 30 (Monday)

@sojioguns
LOL. you really think a desktop casing is tough. besides a mobile phone it harder to model considering the amount of details involved,
i promise to introduce real price in subsequent challenges. like DVD tutorials and so on,   smiley  cool

@spyemy
Good to see your entry. still needs some work i guess.

@Ollyman
Guys i really want to learn something here, am a graphics artist/website designer.
Skick around, hopefully you'll learn something.

Am not sure if am allowed to participate but i will give it a try. I should probably post some work in progress this evening.

More reference has been added to the first post.

finally, soe thing to do.i'm IN too.
@ZPixel: Lets go there, am looking forward to seeing your work.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by CGKing(m): 1:21pm On Mar 23, 2009
like it
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by spyemy(m): 1:33pm On Mar 23, 2009
I was not competing with anybody I really do not have the time for that right now but would have loved to if it was necessary,
I am tied down with animation and technicals(coding and expressions) which is my main interest, I just wanted to give it a try, dont judge my rough work that fast my friend hopefully when the time comes i will give you so much to jugde, so good luck guys and i will be back to vote for the best.

before I leave your competition thread alone, I am new to nairaland so I took some time to go thru the video and graphics section and I am impressed with grafidon for his comitment and support to other members, which is what we really need and not just the show offs and come to think of the fact you do this alone, you are really good and i know you will get there I just hope foreigners will not take you away from us.
I am  also impressed with resichild for his effort in trying to bring people together, which is a very difficult task but hopefully I believe you can do it and I really would like to work with you someday,  I  love your work sojigun the video on facebook is wow, and zpixel and so many other guys I cannot mention, also why is everyone hiting at kemjisuper,  please kemji pick up there software packages and prove them wrong or another way to go, if not modelling is to  look for motionbuilder or maya  and teach us real animation with maybe poser characters or stick characters(by the way that is what they do in schools such as animationmentor.com) you do not have to be good at everything my friend you can always collab with people from here or with people around the world depending on how good you are in what you do. who knows we might be seeing a more compilated ekwe dance with the moonwalk.   goodluck guys. Now let the competition continue before my head gets chopped off.

Interesting and am waiting to learn
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by codename47(m): 9:12am On Mar 24, 2009
my WIP. The task Looked pretty simple at 1st but when i started, started proving stubborn(especially the front),pls if u av any pointers,lets hear it, afterall the whole idea is to learn from each other.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by Kemjisuper(m): 9:27am On Mar 24, 2009
Wow! This is good @Codename47. shocked

I think I'm now motivated to re-install my 3dsmax. (It got corrupted after running for a while).

Impressive
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by zPixel(m): 12:21pm On Mar 24, 2009
@codename47
Nice start. I think you nailed the basic shape already. i personally think your mesh is getting dense already, try to only add egdes to areas where needed only. keep it up smiley
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 1:26pm On Mar 24, 2009
hmm. might be nice to dust the modeling cobwebs!
cant dedicate more than a day tho.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 1:33pm On Mar 24, 2009
grabs at various stages.

@ code
nice going.
didnt want to start with a basic primitive, the casing was too curvy.
stuffs actually tougher than it looks!

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by CGKing(m): 1:47pm On Mar 24, 2009
Men, I didnt want any of this, I have so much work to do with timelines.
But the moment I saw those juicy curves of the Alienware PC, i couldnt stop me.

z pixel, what did u do ta me?

I hope I will finish it.
's wat i did yesterevening.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 1:56pm On Mar 24, 2009
@ cgking
awesome dude!
great detailing.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by zPixel(m): 3:04pm On Mar 24, 2009
Wow! nice to have you guys onboard.
@OKX
nice modeling approach. it brings out the curves faster than box modeling. Please post links to your reference. it will help us. I never knew you use Maya. nice one  cool

@CGking
nice detailing. looks great.
z pixel, what did u do ta me?

3D voodoo.  grin
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by zPixel(m): 3:51pm On Mar 24, 2009
I guess am not suppose to participate. My post with screenshots of my model is missing.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:48pm On Mar 24, 2009
zpix better stop formin and post ya stuff  grin . okx and cgk, you guys are guilty of trying to win votes by seduction. i mean you guys made your models sleeker and sexier than the real one is.(kinda like the female alieness ware) gaskiya dat na ojoro tactics grin . anyways you guys really awesome stuff. all the box and polygonal modelling is pretty tempting. gess theres a thousand ways to climb a mountain. matter of fact im tempted to ditch my approach for the polygonal method. here's my first attempt . just got inspired and thot i shud hav a shot at  it after work before headin home. i chose the spline modeling approach which is good for certain models cus it allows you to go directly to what you trying to bring out and is also good because it helps you watch your quads because to get a surface with the surface modifier you verts must consist of quads. and the main advantage is that you get the lowest polygon count than any modelin technique and you dont even need a smoothin modifier or even a smoothing group to hav a smooth and curvy surface. this is an important thing if you talkin heavily populated scenes or models for game design etc. it initially it gave me some annoyin deformation or smoothing artefacts.had it sorted via the use of bezier corners adjustment of tangents sha.still a work in progress. if there's any points for low plolygon modeling i bet i shud clinch it by a mile cuz im seein a couple million polygons shocked compared to my meager 8000 polys cheesy .added a normal modifier because the damn thing flipped my normals at some point. finally a symmetry modifier. this what i got for today i shud have the rest and the ribs done tomorrow. men this is really fun and educating. lets do this more often.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by xothermik(m): 6:59pm On Mar 24, 2009
imagine the main stuff almost refused to upload, finally did tho.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 7:24pm On Mar 24, 2009
@ zpixel
yeah, when i have major curvy stuff 2 model, i extrude faces along a spline curve.
i figure it cuts my work in half. takes some getting used to tho.

my ref for the side was from the link u posted- i think on the second page.
have uploaded it tho, if it helps.

upload urs already, willya!!

@ xothermik
lol.
yeah, i guess the next challenge should have a poly count limit.
didnt really have time for this, so i chucked a coupla rules n went 4 expediency.
urs is looking good! very professional.

should have renders later 2night. cant work on this beyond 2day.

i guess the materials, rendering and lighting may intensify the challenge. all models, so far, seem to be top notch.
i suggest we try n match the lighting conditions of the original- that way we have a common basis for assessment.

good going all.

Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 7:39pm On Mar 24, 2009
@ xothermik
all game engines deal with ur models as polygons, irrespective of how u model them.
if u export ur 'low polygon' spline model for gaming as is, u'll be blown away by the no. of polys u will get.
thats why it pays to use polygon modeling straight up, that way u have absolute control of ur count.

max's spline modeling has an advantage insofar as subsequent manipulation is within max.
kinda like subdivision surfaces in maya- which combine the best of nurbs and polygons, and is totally unrecognizable by any other package in that subdivision format.

most jobs come with a poly count limit anyways.
just sharing.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by zPixel(m): 9:58pm On Mar 24, 2009
@xothermik
zpix better stop formin and post ya stuff Grin
I did am not sure what deleted the post angry . Anyway, i will post again tomorrow.

I never liked spline and NURBs modeling, but i think you're producing good result with it. will give it a try.

@OKX
i suggest we try n match the lighting conditions of the original- that way we have a common basis for assessment.

I agree with you on that.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by xothermik(m): 9:37am On Mar 25, 2009
what was i thinkin 8000 polys still a huge amout i finally collapsed the stack now i jus hav 115 polys. okx thanks for sharin the tip. briefly started studying game design but dumped it because i dint hav time to learn another programming language cuz i was into flash script then. dint go too far wit dat too jus a couple of basic flash games and i bailed.z pix where's your stuff na. you want to kill us with that your t8 vraying ba. grin . did you snatch d moderators girl or what. i mean what do you mean its missing. even reactor is still live and kickin. what diju du. undecided
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by reactor: 10:59am On Mar 25, 2009
yes oh im still live an kickin. this is very nice and goes to show that 3d gurus never left nairaland in the first pace. one real challenge and they are back. unlike what this forum was turning to that made mockery of them and an insult to post. welcom bak guys great to c ur luvli skills again.
Re: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by jacob05(m): 12:14pm On Mar 25, 2009
Nice one guys i never knew there are good 3d artists in Nairaland {am alway in programming section} .you guys made me re-install my 3ds max 9 and i try if i can get something doing. Any books or online tutorial you can recommend for me on 3ds max 9 and where can i download vray {32 bit}. Nice thread
