Tall Nairalanders In The House,is This True? by BeloHorizonte14: 1:05pm On Aug 11, 2015
Hi Nairalanders,

i have a cousin who stays with my family at the moment. He is between 6'11ft and 7'1ft,depending on the shoe he wears.
He is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering, and he is 25years of age.
Though his height is overly intimidating,he is a cool guy and very nice at heart. He came to Lagos to job hunt.

Problem started when he went to a computer center to edit and print his CV. The owner of the business center,as my cousin explained it to us,told him that with his kind of height he won't get a job and that even if he gets called for an interview,he would be instantly disqualified.

He asked my dad if it is true that his height won't get him a job,my dad couldn't say. But he promised to do some findings about it.

Almost a month gone now,he hasn't been himself,he is often depressed and withdrawn. He hardly eats.

I also wanted to talk to him, but i couldn't because i have doubts as well. I just didn't want to tell him something i am not sure of.

Please Tall nairalanders,'Is this true?
And if it is true, what options does he have?

Kindly share any interview experiences and work place experiences for those working. And please don't forget to say your height.

Thank you

25 year old, 7feet tall young man(If for real), would likely have an intimidating look which would amaze employers.
However, it depends on the kind of company and the job function. There is always a place for everyone.
His height could be an advantage in certain industries like entertainment, sports, military etc.
Tell the dude to calm down.

The problem isn't his height; the problem is his feeling of insecurity. He rather has a very low esteem about himself.
C'mon! That a stranger who doesn't know any better mentioned that he would be turned down for jobs because of his height....and this got him loosing his appetite and getting so depressed?

Whoever said tall guys are confident and all that stuff..?
Guess it doesn't apply to your cousin.

I am 5'7 and unemployed for three years and counting. Is my height the reason I'm unemployed? No!

Your cousin, didn't he get posted during nysc, that one no follow for job experience? Nigerians are very good at saying rubbish and believing it with conviction. They repeat their ignorant statements so much even others start believing it.

Your cousin should keep searching, he'd find something eventually.

The last time i checked my height was ~6ft and over 74kg. I have worked at different organisations, my next stop is the energy sector.

I used to have a friend same height as ur bro, back then in the year 2008, taller than I was back then that we nicknamed him 'Adebayor' cos of his height, he was lanky aswel. Mehn, I am yet to see someone that can beat his confidence at that age.

I think the lack of confidence and mood swing is a personality issue. Needless to add that there are youngmen out there, that are more handsome than I am, some of them their parents even own a house/cars of their own, but their contenance alone is enough to tell you what they think/how they see themselves.

If only people can continue to tell that your brother how bad he does not fit into anywhere, maybe, then will he outgrow self pity and prove them all wrong.
