I had a conversation with someone last night who lamented about the experience she had on the bus on her way home from work. She happened to be on the aisle seat, in between two friends. The friends chatted away across her face! In her words, “they chatted over my head.” Are you guilty of talking or reaching across people’s faces? This is poor behaviour.

When you are seated anywhere and you need to speak to the person across, especially when your conversation will go on for a long period or for the duration of your time there, the polite way to go is to ask to swap seats if the person doesn’t mind.

There is a high chance of getting a YES to that request if you ask politely. You may also let the person know why you are asking to swap; and the reason is that you don’t want to be rude or get the person irritated by speaking across her face or over her head.

The fundamental principle underlying all manners is thinking about other people’s feelings first; because it’s not all about you.
