Interstate Passengers To Pay N200 Tax In Lagos
By Moses Ebosele Sunday, March 22, 2009
YABA Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State has introduced N200 tax on each Inter-state passenger, who board vehicles from any motor parks located within its jurisdiction. The N200 tax is valid for one trip only.
Also, each transporter, according to the council shall be assigned a revenue desk officer to ensure compliance.
In a letter addressed to all the transporters titled "Re: Implementation of enhanced motor park levy" the council said the revenue desk officers are expected to submit a copy of the record at the revenue office at the LCDA headquarters every week.
The letter signed by the secretary to the council, Doyin Rojaiye, explained that transporters are expected to remit the total levy collected every week (N200 by the total number of passengers in the previous week) as shown in the manifest, receipt and LCDA's daily levy confirmation sheet.
Part of the letter dated March 16, 2009 read "Further to the meeting held on January 29, 2009, with the transporters and our letters dated March 12, 2009, in respect of the enhanced motor park levy and having given due consideration to the present economic circumstances and financial meltdown ravaging the global economy leading to continuing reduction in the revenue accruing to the three tiers of Government, we hereby intimate you that the enhanced motor park levy shall be N200 flat on each ticket sold and not 10 per-cent as discussed in the meeting in order not to burden our people beyond their financial capability
"The LCDA count on your cooperation and success of this revenue drive, and we assure you of our support and better service in terms of eliminating miscreants from all parks, good roads within the LCDA, sanctioning and removing all transporters without park, quick response in clearing all waste from your vicinity, 24 hours adequate security and safety of passengers and transport operators among others.
"We vehemently seek your cooperation with our representatives. Revenue desk officers and monitoring team shall be properly introduce to you on the commencement day March 18, 2009; in carrying out our constitutional duty" said Rojaiye
Other duties of the revenue desk officers, according to the council also include taking the record of total passengers per bus (Luxury or mini buses) among others

This is another ANTI_IGBO move by those people that do not travel themselves.
They think that they will use this MONIES again to revive another COCOA HOUSE .

They did not think of it very well and it will come back to bite them. I hope they know that OGUN STATE is a STATE different from LAGOS, remember Osun,Oyo, Ondo Ekiti, they must pay too.

> WHY?
> How can some one paying N150 to town next door in OGUN STATE will pay N200.00 in TAXES. You can tell right away that they were not the TARGET. If not them , WHO ?,
> They just want the HAUSA and IGBO traders on those overnight buses. They just can not see progress being made. They think that they are taking out monies from they in Lagos.Really ?, How can you take money from someone who never had it that want your own by the way of sneaky taxation!!!
>
> They have their plan on on those overnight N3000.00 rates
>
> I will want them to implement and enforce this, from Ikeja tool gate, ketu down to maroko. They will make a killing, But you know thay will only set up camps at the IGBO BUS STOPS and OVERNIGHT STATIONS, demadimg for passnger lists and capacity.
> They will only go after BUSES with EASTERN PLATES and NAMES
>
> They should man road block at the state boarders !!!!!,
>
> They just cannot stand to see your progress. They just cannot take it from the RAG TAGS.
>
> They are taking INTERSTATE = INTER REGION, .SURPRISE !!!!!!! DUMBOS !

Does this tax not violate section 41 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which reads as follows:

41. (1) Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereby or exit therefrom.

Constitutional lawyers, where are you?

Other countries are looking to assist their citizens and our leaders are seriously looking for reasons to impoverish its people further with lousy and poorly thought out policies that just serve to massage their divisive evil hearts. Meanwhile these same LGA officials await for allocation to share from a federal pot they barely contributed to.

All these for N200, that's a bargain wink

the transporters should now make sure the LCDA keep their side of the promise

Is it the passenger paying it or the transporter on behalf of his passengers?
either way the passenger suffers, his fare is either hiked to cover the cost or he coughs up an extra money for rogues
Are transporters not already paying taxes?
of course the main targets are the luxurious buses heading east,is that hard to deduce?
how many Yorubas in Lagos have travelled beyong Sagamu?
how many have entered luxurious buses going anywhere besides going for NYSC?
