In Islamic culture, the concept of Jihad is tackled on a legal basis. Unlike what we are used to believe, not Jihad translates as "holy war". Possibly it should be translated as "legal war": the attempt is to give a legal justification for war, which is not necessarily religious.

It should be noted, however, that the law in Islamic countries has many points in common with the dictates of religion: Sharia, Islamic law, the Koran, the sacred text of Islam. However, Islamic law has undergone an evolution, whereby, except in very rare cases of dogmatic fundamentalism, the Qur'an is no longer the sole source of the entire legislation.

Jihad, in Arabic, means "effort", "commitment". The precept is to strive on the way traced by God, to pursue his will. According to a famous anecdote, Muhammad theorized three modes of Jihad: prayer (heart), preaching (language) and the practice of war (hand). In other words, Jihad is not just war, as we are used to believe, but encompasses various actions to religious purposes. In the Qur'an, the word Jihad only appears four times with the meaning of "war": in Chapter XXII verse. 78, chapter IX step24, verse. 25-52, verse. 60-1.

Another common place to debunk is the intolerance of Muslims towards the members of other religions. In the early centuries, up to 1100 ad, Islamic States were very well disposed towards those who embraced another religious faith, but acknowledged the ruling political authority. The base of this tolerance was concept of Dhimma, literally"protected minority".
