As a Nigerian, we all have come across or heard about voodoo at on time or the other in our life. But are the so-called powers of African traditional religion real?

Growing up in Nigeria I heard a lot of stories about people being cursed or hunted by underwater spirits or the ever famous "mamiwater". To be frank with you all it is really scary and something that i don't want anything to do with.

But why do some Nigerians always have to resort to voodoo practices to haunt people they don't like, or people that are successful and they are not happy with it or to make people suffer. Do people have to be that wicked?

Personally, I do respect voodoo but i don't believe in it. I want to know what you guys think and please be as objective and realistic as possible. Cheers.

It is a well known fact that some Nigerians practice Voodoo especially those we have in the top government echelon... most of the time they do it to remain in power.

I personally think that voodoo practice is demonic. And anything that is being associated with God is forbidden.

I've heard of it, its common in Haiti, i don't believe it can work on me though!

Who will want to attack some one physically when you can do it with a doll and some needles?
Its cheaper, less cumbersome and you don't get the police crawling around your home... undecided

I believe there is Good and evil; and evil manifests itself in various forms, at home and abroad.

I don't know, for sure, what is out there so i try to avoid all wierdish things/people ... as prevention is better that cure.

Re: Voodoo: Do You Believe In It? by IB7(f): 10:48pm On Oct 27, 2005
Honestly, I don't believe voodoo exist. Call me naive or ignorant. And it has nothing to do with me leaving nigeria at an early age. I have met people from all over the world in United States. Everyone of 'em comment about good and evil. Now if we want to classify evil as voodoo then the list goes on. Per your question/keynote effects8000, it is all psychology which is the characteristics of mental makeup it is the temperament and associated behavior of an individual or group, or that exhibited by those engaged in a particular activity. That activity can be evil in terms of doing something wrong.

As far as practicing evil is society terminology of voodoo, especially in nigeria. What is evil? We all have an answer to that. Voodoo can also be classify as evil to most nigerians but not to me. There is evil but not such thing as voodoo. Nigerians cry of voodoo because they are infatuated with it since hundreds of years ago. I never knew anything such as voodoo practices until I was 17 and started making friends {nigerians} in high school. When confronted my mom about it; being the kind of christian she is, she said it is pure wickedness that most nigerians engaged themselves in. Now does it really exists? Absolutely not! Yeah, thatz what I told mom. She said it does, I said it doesn't. She has that nigerian mentality which most nigerians like herself suffers from.

Call it a practice or a religion or whatever, it does not exist. My naive believe is that most nigerians in nigeria and everywhere else who mature into a teenage/adult age before leaving nigeria believe in it because it is the nigeria get away concept when there's no answer for many questions facing nigeria. Most noble religion {christianity} is there but without patience, they divert to other means of artificial make believe practice to be satisfied with the circumstance or situation at hand.

Voodoo is a myth. People who believe or practice it are only looking for some unrealistic answers, to satisfy their worrys or whatever reasons they might have; i.e. wishing others bad luck, good luck etc. Voodooism is more or less an cultism practice which is not real. There are two things on earth classified by KARMA. Good and evil exist, basically what goes around comes around at its time.

This is my 2 cents on voodoo, don't take it personal. It's only an opinion. Thanks I.B.

Can somebody here give a clear definition of voodoo? Does this include traditional religions and practices? Is it only the occult or are traditional native doctors also practicing voodoo? Is only part of these practices voodoo or only the supernatural part?

What exactly is voodoo?

As I don't believe in the supernatural, I will probably not believe in voodoo either.

Voodoo (or witchcraft as I'll prefer to call it) exists. Take it or leave it. wink

There are so many instances that occur around us to prove it. Don't be naive... smiley

As far as am concerned voodoo or witchcraft as rightfully put it exists well. I think its just the name its called. In some countries its referred to as voodoo but in nigeria , its witchcraft. If u believe in the supernatural, then why not in voodoo. ?

To be honest, I do believe in Voodoo, since actually it's just one more form of magic. I know one real story to prove the point. What happened was truly strange - a very real tattoo (visible for everybody) appeared and later on dissappered without a trace. Nobody did it physically. What that might mean if not magic? Does anybody know what that might be?
Re: Voodoo: Do You Believe In It? by Seun(m): 11:35pm On Jan 03, 2006
Perhaps somebody added the tattoo to your skin while you were asleep, and removed it again later?

Here's a quote that illustrates why I don't believe in Juju/'voodoo':
A friend of mine was an intern at Bellvue Hospital in New York. A 28-year old man from Aruba said he was going to die, because he had been cursed. He was admitted for psychiatric evaluation and found to be normal, but his health steadily declined. My friend was able to rehydrate him, balance his electrolytes, and give him nutrients, but nevertheless the man worsened, insisting that he was cursed and there was nothing that could prevent his death.

My friend realized that the patient would, in fact, soon die. The situation was desperate. Finally he told the patient that he, the doctor, was going to invoke his own powerful medicine to undo the curse, and his medicine was more powerful than any other. He got together with the house staff, bought some headdresses and rattles, and danced around the patient in the middle of the night, chanting what they hoped would be effective-sounding phrases. The patient showed no reaction, but next day he began to improve.

The man went home a few days later. My friend literally saved his life.

I belive in voodoo and dont think that "it" is evil at all . "Evil" or "Good" comes fromt he person that practices , this goes for anything , merely being alive could be considered evil. voodoo is an ancient religion (older than christianity) and i do see it as the religion of the african people, since it started in West Africa and only got to Haiti by the slave trade. the only reason that christianity is considered "better" than voodoo is because of the slave trade. Honestly, i think that africa could have been saved the abuse and torment and lived on happily practicing it's own faith , rather than having christianity shoved down it's throat. The only reason that i remain a catholic is that it is (for the most part) peaceful, but i still do beilive that voodoo is a great source of healing and guidance .

How do you explain situations where Police engage Armed robbers in gunfire and the robbers don't die because they have some sort of bulletproof charms

How do you explain the OPC burning up police stations with eggs?

Voodoo exists and it is real

I don't believe those folktales. OPC simply promotes those rumors to increase their mystique.

My mother once witnessed an OPC membership initiation live.  She actually went visiting someone, when she heard the noise of gun shots at the back of the person's house, coming from an uncompleted building.  She peeped and saw that it was the newly initiated guys who were being tested with guns shots; which didn't penetrate into their body (the bullets I mean).  They were not wearing bullet proofs either. She later got to know that they were OPC guys from the person she went visiting, which, according to him, wasn't a strange practice in his hood.

I wasn't there anyway, but I know she definitely wouldn't lie about such a thing, or cook such story up.  She would be in a better position to explain this though.

Your mom heard gunshots coming from an uncompleted building, and decided to take a peep, staying long enough to see several guys get shot without any damage to their person? Interesting!

P.S What or who are the OPC?

Did anybody remember the Okija shrine saga? Where is that shrine located? I know for sure that the people from that part of the country are 99% devotee of a certain religion, yet they believe in the fetish power of the Okija shrine.

It is on record that one of the governors of the area (now removed by the court) who happens to be a Medical Doctor and a Catholic devotee I suppose, was made to swear on oath to the god of the shrine. I think it is apposite to say that the people of that area have more faith in voodoo and their traditions than the religion they practice. At least the example of given above attests to this claim.

Your mum was decieved. The OPC members simply didn't shoot any live ammunition. They shot blanks.
