Mr Goldenheart
Its good to see how far you have gone. I don't if there is anyway we can connect because I'd really love to speak with you extensively as regards Digital Art.

Goldenheart:
I am a passionate comic artist....as well as graphics designer...

I am making a living out of it....

I remember during my 3rd year in the university, I just got a Job from a children storybook company to illustrate stories.

The illustrations were much n it was difficult getting a "talented" artist to help out. There was deadline, the faster you finish, the faster you get paid. it was basically a race against time.

So i read the story,

1) Grab my pencil n sketch,

2) I ink with a graphic pen I borrowed from achitecture students (Rotring)

3) Upload to my computer with scanner

4) Use my mouse to apply colors in (photoshop)

5) Convert to jpg and give the soft file to my client.

It was a slow and crappy process....

(to be cont)

Comics & their creation started from the following times:

*Prehistoric era of cavemen drawing their stories on the cave walls
*Egyptian heiroglyphics to tell stories of the ascent or descent of gods amongst them
*To the birth of Marvel & DC comics which has set the standard for comic making globally even both respectively owning their own styles of comic script writing.
*Thanks to technology with access to the internet and Lagos ComicCon. The Nigerian Comic Scene is bubbling with the likes of Comic Republic,The Vortex,YouNeek Studios,ShadowBlack,Real Fiction comics to mention a few.

This thread is dedicated to the making of comics, tools for drawing & publishing all the way to how to market them profitably.

Good afternoon bro, I wanted to ask you what could be the profit margin on making comics.
I want to launch a comic franchise and I have been cracking my head for a winning formula, I have alternative ideas but I was thinking if I wanted to even sell it straight up in issues or episodes what can I be looking at in terms of cost and profits.

Just coming out of the ban*smh*Nairaland na wa...

Adobe CS apps are obsolete and have been retired by Adobe since. Just google "Adobe Creative Suite 3 apps direct download" and search for Free Appnee for the universal activator.

Greetings to you as well,bro.

The profit margins is up to you based on your printing costs but before you do that know some things involved.

Foreign comics old issues go for N1000-N1500 while new issues go for N2000-N2500. Nigerian comics sell in that 2k presently. I'll give 2 case studies i use as a guide.

Case Study 1: Comic Republic (http://thecomicrepublic.com/)

Based in Lagos, publishes their comic online for free and sell their printed copies at conventions, creative meetups or events they are invited. You wonder how they make money right?!!Adverts by companies like First Bank,Wakanow,Samsung to name a few, creating story boards for films and clients who contract them to make comics for them or illustration gigs.

Case Study 2: YouNeek Studios
(https://youneekstudios.com/)

Based in the US mostly and Lagos, publishes graphic novels that got funded through kickstarter campaigns. Sold on Amazon,Kindle,Comixology,Barnes and Nobles and also got a distribution deal with Diamond Distribution same company that handles the distribution of the big shots like DC,Marvel,IDW,Boom,Image to name a few. First African comic to achieve such a feat. Shares some free content once in a while though. They attend events on both sides as it goes down.

Follow both of them on social media.

I appreciate the reply bro.
I actually was thinking of a free distribution model, because I surely don't want to sell my comics for 1k +. I am more interested in it going around, I mean deep penetration then monetizing through sponsors I feel sponsors would key in if they know their adverts is gonna be seen by a lot of eyes.

But I just had a second thought that it doesn't hurt if I am able to sell for like say N100 per issue or N200 and make some profits. I want my issues to be a 10 page color booklet but it looks like I can't get a profit selling at N100 or N200 so I might be sticking to my free distribution model.
