Hello house,
I recently purchased a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander toks posted here on nairaland last month. I bought the car for my dad and intend to send it to him in december. Since then, the car has been parked here in Lagos. I bought the car with about quarter tank of fuel and I've been using it to run short distance errands.
But yesterday, I decided to fill the tank for the first time. I did that, only to discover the tank was leaking seriously. Overnight, the level dropped from full to almost half. I took it to my mech who removed the tank. Lo and behold, the tank was completely rusted. A complete write-off.
We took the tank to Ladipo, only to learn that the tank is very scarce. After a whole day of searching and making calls, I'm left with two options.

Option A: They suggested a tank from another Mitsubishi brand (I'm guessing a Gallant or a Montero). They said rust is common to that particular model. Most Outlanders have been fitted with this make-shift tank. But I'm worried if the electronics will work. Will the gauge still read correctly? What about the evap system? I'm really scared about the potential implications. But they are assuring me that a lot of Outlanders on the road have been fitted with this modified tank.

Option B: The model that I bought is 4WD, with a propeller transferring power to the rear wheels when required. It runs primarily on front wheels except when the front wheels lose traction in mud, sand, snow etc then the ECU transfers power to the rear. In other words, everyday normal driving is FWD. Now here is the thingy. Someone has the FWD model tank for sale. This tank can be used on my car, but the propeller needs to be permanently removed. In other words, I get an OEM tank, but I lose the 4WD capability.

Better still, does anyone know how I can get the appropriate tank?

That is my dilemma. A 4WD car with potential fuel electronic problems or a good fuel system without a 4WD capability.
I will appreciate your inputs before I make an irreversible mistake.

There should be one or two of this model of your car somewhere that is being stripped for parts. Your best bet is to make as much contacts as possible in Lagos, Ibadan, Onitsha etc to see if you can locate one but try gazuz's option first.

around 150 to 350 pounds freight + cost to bring in from the States, best course if you want to keep it forever aka best choice all things considered but extremely unfriendly to the pocket!

local break yard best course if you want to keep it for a short while aka best economic sense

You have been properly advised as above. Please act as suggested by those who posted ahead of me. One of them was so kind as to leave what many would consider a trade secret!

Please I have this same issue now. I need a tank or a solution? Did this suggestion of working another tank with propeller removed.

I went with the option B. that is, the propeller was removed and the car is now fully FWD only.

the problem is that the fuel gauge is not accurate. when its full, it shows half. when its empty, it shows three quarter etc.

overtime, my dad has gotten used to the fuel gauge. he now understands the false reading and knows when to top up.
