Translator’s words: All too often we hear of our brothers and sisters suffering a ‘burnout’ when faced with Fitna and adversity. This is another reminder of the great trials and difficulties many of our Salaf endured for the sake of Allah, so this religion could be passed down to us in its pure form, as it was transmitted to them. I hope this serves as an encouragement for myself first; and then others, to seek the help of Allah and remain patience upon this religion. Shaykh Abdullah Al Bukhari mentions several narrations of the same incident, so we summarized the various narrations for simplicity, while attaching the Arabic audio for authenticity. I ask Allah the Blessed and Exalted to make us firm upon Islam and the Sunnah until the day we meet Him. And to save us from the trials and tribulations. Shaykh Abdullah Al Bukhari: This is from the amazing heartfelt illustrations—for whoever has a heart or he who listens while he is mindful. From the amazing illustrations of patience and firmness upon the truth and the Sunnah, by way of the truth and the Sunnah; is that which occurred to the Imam, the example, the righteous man, the martyr—we hope Allah will take him as such—Imam Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Sahl Ar Ramli known as ibn An Nabulsi who died in the year 363 H. Imam An Nabulsi was imprisoned by Bani Ubayd—the Rafidah. He was imprisoned by Bani Ubayd and they crucified him because of the Sunnah. The reason he was imprisoned and crucified was due to his adherence to the Sunnah, firmness upon it and calling to it. Ibn Al Jawzi said he was brought from a wooden cage, taken before the commander of Bani Tammem and tested. The commander who was from the Rafidah of Bani Ubayd said to him: “It has reached us that you said, if a man has ten arrows it is obligatory upon him to shoot one arrow at the Romans and shoot the other nine arrows at us.” Imam An Nabulsi responded: “I didn’t say this.” “Rather what I said is; if a man has ten arrows it is obligatory upon him to shoot nine arrows at you and then shoot the tenth arrow at you also; for indeed you have changed the religion, murdered the righteous, and claimed the light of divinity for yourselves.” So they unclothed him, beat him, crucified him, and then they commanded a Jew to skin him. He was skinned from the parting in his head down to his face. As he was being skinned he continued to recite the statement of Allah the Exalted: That is written in the Book (of our Decrees) [1] Look at this patience upon the truth. He reflected upon this great pillar of Iman— the belief in the divine decree—during this difficult moment. He was crucified and his skin was removed; and he was reciting the Quran; believing in the divine decree, remaining patient, seeking the reward from Allah. That is written in the Book (of our Decrees) This is what Allah has decreed and decided. He was skinned down to his face and he continued to remember Allah and he remained patient.
