Fon is like the umbrella name of the Egun people. I think it's either from Nfan, like you say "n'gbati" for Yoruba. Don't take my word for it though, such etymology can be dicey.

But the most probable meaning would be "wake up", from "mi Fon dagbe, mi ku lo", (ajire, okun, we awake in good spirit, full of life/strength). It's originally a word from here.

The rule of thumb is, I go for the meaning that I can find it's replica in Yoruba, because these people think alike alot. The Yoruba version of the cognomen is "kaaro o jireh".

Fon, wake up.

My experience while living at Pave Kerekou, a place which is heavily dominated by Fon people. While my landlord was a fon man, told my colleague and I that Fongbe are different from gun people.

Infact, I saw the inscription on a Jehovah (Temoi Jehovah) witness, which is a place of worship, that is not too far to Pave Kerekou, if one is coming from Cotonou through Abomey Calavi . TheNational university is also situated in this route.

Infact, the languages are classified differently and acknowledged their differences. While the Fongbe often laugh at Yoruba people with a name known as Ahouri.

And when I enquire what Ahouri meant, the colleague friend of mine who lectures at Abomey Calavi universetaire, said, such word was seen as funny because ,the Fongbe relates the name to a boastful person.

Cheers

Thanks very much for the enlightenment, all the answers are not in one place. My aunt once told me "Fonnu e wa mi". This I take to mean "we originated from the Fon".

I'm not very conversant with the country or her places compare to your first hand experience. I think my folks are from Vacon. There's a place there called "Agonmeh".

Ahouri

This name is the variant of the Yoruba Ohori/Awori/Awonrin/Ahonrin. The Yoruba equally refer the people of the border as "Ohori".

The Fon here are making reference to the closest Yoruba people to them as different from them. Their name for the Yoruba derived from the root awon-orin: the emigrants.

Fon belongs to gbe linguistic family. It's known as fongbe, and if it's spoken, you will be able to comprehend it to some extent if you speak any of the Gugbe variants.

Agbomeh Calavi
Akala-magbo.

Agbomeh/Abomeh: the people of Agbo
Calavi/Kalavi: descent of Kala

Akala-magbo: Akala, omo Agbo.
Awori: omo Agbo dere

Okala/Oka-nla/Ere. This historical motiff pervades the history and culture of the indigenous people. Hence Calavi is equivalent of the Yoruba "awon omo Akala".

The place name derived from the totem, boa constrictor, Ojola. This is rather a covert reminder for Danvotun. Akala thus mean, "able to fold and stretch"

Do you have also some translation for:

Thank you again!

Well, just to present a background, I am writing a story about a girl who belonged to the Egun, and she had a beautiful voice to sing, and her brother was protecting her when they were separated from their family.

Could you help me to create some original names in Egun language for his?

Thanks ♥

Ehù is Egun for the ocean, to steal is to ja'jo. Ehunufinto would mean "Sea things stealers". You can make it ehunufinto-gan to make it more chronic.

A singing sensation is called kenfe. It has mindshare and will be good for a fictional character.

You can call the brother Athan, it means struggle or strength. You can make it athanme, drawn from great struggle as rough fictional source.

More success.

Thank you, your replies have been very useful, still would like to ask for help to get more female names
I like very much the combination of sounds on the name Kalysha, but I am searching for a very exotic name with the same sound structure "K - sh" kinda.
Can you help me to create some words that sounds similar and can fit to a main female character?

Thank you soo much for it! cheesy

I can join in your joking about my ignorance XD but I'm pretty sure that anyone would feel the same way about a language that is unfamiliar. Creativity has no limits grin Nevertheless, I am still interested in finding someone with knowledge of Engu culture, its language, also about Vodun, we are interested in someone who can contribute with knowledge and also someone who wants to record voices for our project. I am very new to this forum, I hope to find someone interested in collaboration!

For those that finds it difficult to understand what I'm going through from the hands of this people up to this moment, you can review my post with the last discussant in this place.

In there is a juicy offer that best suits my kind of person and I might definitely have upper hand because even here, the one presenting the offer is so ignorant of the culture that he couldn't spell the group name properly.

That's intentionally done, judging from where the conversation started, as I'm not the one who introduced this writer to the culture of his plot.

So, how would someone that wants to devote his attention to a choosen culture suddenly became amateurish in the name of the group but keen on vodoo and all the rest? Now look at how this offer has been growing.

I would have stopped at the last post. I have told this fellow I'm not interested, but he tries to reach me through mail from here. That's the validation that I'm the avatar to this plot.

They were using anything I'm interested in to lure me both online and offline, hoping that one of such will convert. But not being greedy for mundane things and the help of God has been seeing me through.

The moment I start to cross their t and dot their j, I'm already on the trip to where they are plotting for me to be.

In life, never allow greed and inordinate ambition lead you, or else you will furnish the enemy with all the answers he needed against you and you won't be able to make amends. You will never know where you made mistake.

You have to put yourself in the name coiner's shoes. The person here has been influenced by Yoruba. You felt awkward because you don't have his kind of "experience".

This person has interpreted "Igbeyin Dara" to Egun language, it's common to hear the Yoruba say "Igbeyin adun". One can thus "export" this to any other tongue.

But godo, as in philology connotes backwardness in Egun. So the name won't really sit right at a go without inter-ethnic appraisal for an Egun speaker.

Don't mind my analysis, it's aimed to shed some light on what may not meet the eyes immediately. I completely agree with your interpretation.

Hope you are doing great?

I'm in great spirit brother. I'm so happy to reunite with my family after almost 18 years of lost connection. I did brought back some good tune up on the YouTube channel I created for it.

Agbaweh mizon Yahweh weh thohu nle tho zuntete meaning empty we came into this world Yahweh it was who empowered everything standing to become what they are.

I felt nostalgic tears drizzling at the other song about the hereafter rendered by the ace broadcaster himself, Ezekiel Ifayon:

"Waitho gbakun toweh,
Omesi alopa wiwe nai lon.

"Wai tho ghakun to weh,
Alopa wiwe nai lon."

Go and bear your crown,
Whoever is pure handed will make heaven.

The earth is a beautiful place no doubt, but may we make it to the good arms of the Creator at the end of our divinely appointed tenure on the face of the Earth.

"The Power that place us here is greater than who we are." My quote.

Egun people has some of the nicest sounding vocabularies and thought invoking names. Music wise, Egun songs and dirges are of the highest quality African spiritual.

I have listen to such in rendition, and to the kinestethics of the 'hunsie's' dancesteps, the dance of mortals initiated to the deities of our ancestor's Votun.

Most Egun bear names with deep meaning, can't collate all but some.

Seveo: Creator is passionate with word.

Sejro: Creator's desire.

Sewanu: Creator be thanked.

Sesinu: Creator's own thing.

Vyhutu: For the sake of a child.

Johnde: One good thing.

Hosu: Several tidings.

Mausi: God's belonging.

Sonayon: Tomorrow will be well.

Totai: Father at market.

Dethin: Prayer is real.

Senami: God's gift to me.

Mehgonu: Individual personal issue.

Mendo: Whom do I have?

Who do I have to add some more to the list?

Alright,

Ajoviyon, the business (of raising) children is good.

Asokere, patridge, (aparo, quail). So asokere might have been a deconstruction of a proverb made into name. That I'm not able to guess.

Ekundayo: they don't translate Ekundayo to Egun language. Rather, Egun adopt the same as though it's Egun.

Kundayo, Egun loves eliminating the first vowel of their Yoruba names, except for letter A or O in most cases.

Ekun, (Avi), di, (zun, lezun), Ayo, (ahya). Aiha, a close sound to ahya means memory. Ajoyo, rejoicing, jahyah.

I hope this helps.
