Behold! The State In Nigeria Where A Death Row Prisoner Gets Freedom Plus N1m Bonus

The Governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano, has constitutionally displayed the power of prerogative of mercy vested on him to veto the death sentence of a prisoner and also releasing 25 prisoners with a take home package of N1m to each of them.

According to The Punch, 25 prisoners in Anambra State on Thursday regained freedom following the amnesty granted to them by the state governor, to mark the 55th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Those, who benefited from the governor’s amnesty package, which was announced with a lifeline of N1m, were from Awka, Onitsha and Aguata prisons.

The state governor, made this known while speaking on Independence day, he said, “Brothers and sisters, I see hope for Anambra State. I see hope for Nigeria. It is along this line that I have decided to give hope to the hopeless amongst us by exercising my powers of prerogative of mercy and granting amnesty to 25 prisoners serving different terms in the three prisons in Anambra State.”

One of the strong beneficiaries, Innocent Okeke was sentenced to death, but was later commuted to life imprisonment before he was finally freed on Thursday by the governor.

Obiano also said government would give the 25 beneficiaries of the amnesty training in the state vocational skill acquisition centre after which they would be given N1m as a lifeline to enable them become self-employed and contribute to the society.

Perhaps their cases were reviewed and it was found there was reasonable doubt regarding their guilt

No one wastes their time and public resources on people who are a proven menace to society.

All I see here is a man (The Governor) who has acted well within his constitutional capacity and prerogative to give hope and succour to a few deserving individuals.
They now have a glimmer of hope, even if the one million couldn't possibly quantify for the time wasted in years.

We should expect that they do not screw up this one lifeline they got, getting tribalistically petty about this news isn't worth it.

Kidnappers, rapist, murders, assasins etc are usually condemned to either life imprisonment or the death row.

The governor's innovation and intentions are appluadible, but let's not kid ourselves. There are millions of wrongly charged persons at different police stations are Anambra waiting to be charged to court, there are those who have been charged to court and the court striker their cases out yet the Nigerian police refuses to simply let them go ,because no nobody is willing to bail them out or atleast claim to know them.

This is wrong and dangerous and it has nothing to with petty tribal sentiment.

To free a man on the death row plus cash money can be dangerous to the security, lives and property of that society.

This is wrong and dangerous and it has nothing to with petty tribal sentiment.

I wasnt being Tribalistic. If an act is displeasing to me I condemn it not becone a tribalist or racist or fanatic. I could be angry if the unemployed youths in his state who are looking to get a helping hand in form of a small loan to start a small trade or business are neglected and the state fund given to true criminals who's only requirement for such cash was crime. I feel more better if truly those men were wrongfuly charged men.
He spent 25 million naira imagine if he had given 200- 500k to young people wanting to start small businesses in his state and monitored their business growth. Wouldnt that money have been spent more wisely?

As for the freed men, he could give them cash gifts of 50k anr some govt housing and trained them in any vocational job of their choice and based on their seriiusness helped establish a business for them at the end of their training. No cash given.

The last part wasn't directed at you.
It was to the OP.
The first part of my post was more of a rejoinder to what you posted.

The paragraph I left was a sign that I'm now penning my thoughts on the issue raised. You catch my drift?

It is not against the law.
Most of those freed are likely to be those that were about to complete their long jail term, those who the prison officers have ascertained that they are now rehabilitated, or those whose case has no ground but have stayed a long time in detention.
So this is a good one, especially the money aspect. It will go a long way to help them psychologically.
