Between the 60s to 90s, speaking Onitsha was often regarded as a form of class among socialite Igbos. My maternal grandmother, mom's mom, barely ever spoke her native dialect but Onitsha all the time. I think it is where the 'classy' feeling comes from. Not to look down on southern Igbo dialects but I don't think Igbo people generally regard any southern Igbo dialect as 'classy' or 'cheeky'. They are just Igbo dialects, nothing extraordinary about them.
I agree. Those days you were considered somewhat educated or enlightened if you spoke some form of Anambra dialect/ Infact, it's really not different these days.
