Ex-militants from Niger Delta states, numbering over 500, on Tuesday, October 20, staged a protest to the National Assembly, alleging that the management of the Amnesty Programme embezzled over N405m meant for them.
The group said its members have not been paid their monthly allowances since 2011, and it specifically accused one Mr.Peter Evah from the Amnesty Office of withholding the fund which they claimed amounts to about N405 million.
They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to launch a full scale probe of the Amnesty programme to unravel the details of the funds are being spent.
The group’s coordinator, Barrister Angela Adigwe, said the non-payment of the ex-militants’ allowances is a conspiracy among the top management of the Presidential Amnesty programme.
She also called on Buhari to urgently institute a panel of inquiry to probe the programme starting from the onset – to determine whether the real persons are benefiting from the programme.
The protesters carried various placards with inscriptions like; ‘Enough is enough, Perter Evah must go’, ‘President Buhari should probe Amnesty Programme’, ‘Pay us our money Peter Eva,’ and ‘We want justice from government’ among others.
